SPECTOR® Club - Part 45

So what do those DR Long Necks compare to? Are they more like Lo-Riders or Hi-Beams? I'm guessing Lo-Riders since they have hex cores. Has anyone here used them and if so can you comment on their sound vs. regular DR sets?

I like the long necks on my Warwicks and have just put them on a rebop five. They feel a little "spongey" or "rubberband-like" if that makes any sense? I loved them in the past, however if you like your strings to feel "tight" these arent for you. I find them to have less top end zing than the high beams......my 2 cents

Well I had been using Lo-Rider nickels but I felt those were actually too tight. I'm really liking the way the Fat Beams feel on a couple of the 5'ers.

i'm just about ordering one from them) i think they must perfectly match my black Euro 435, the only doubt is about the E string if it fits the bridge slot because it;s not tapered..

As far as the stainless steels go, I find them pretty bright and aggressive on the 435 P/J. Pretty nice strings for the price. I think I prefer the DR's to them, but I don't regret using them.

That must have gotten lost in the churn the first time.

As far as the nut spacing question, I am not an expert, but I though all the nuts were wider than Fender Jazz spacing except for the Wimbish model, but I could be horribly wrong about that.

As far as pickup config, the P/J is the one most responsible for the "Spector" sound, but both the Euro and US 4-strings are offered in dual humbucker models (Euro 4LX-TW and NS-4) respectively. The positioning of the humbuckers on a Euro 4LX-TW seems different than on a 5LX or 6LX so I can't comment on the sound personally. The NS-4 seems to have them in the same place as my NS-5XL, which has a great Spector sound.

Bunk is correct! According to the Spector website, the 4 string models are 1.64 at the nut and .75 at the bridge which I believe to be more along the lines of a p-bass. The Wimbish model is the only NS model I know of that has the "jazz" string spacing (1.5 @ the nut).

The typical pickup config OF the NS-2 is p/j's, the NS-4 is 2 DC humbuckers. I believe you can special order most of the models (both US and Euro) with others pickup configs (i.e. jazz pickups or MM or J/MM pickup).

The four string legend classics also come with soap bar pickups. Don't let the Korean make turn you off, those basses are solid, and do give you a great representation of the classic Spector sound, especially the newer ones with all maple bodies. If its not entirely sounding how you want, a preamp or pickup swap isn't that big of a deal.
Doesn't help your nut width issue though... I'm not sure where they measure compared to a jazz.

As the self appointed VP of the Spector Strings Club (SSC) I have to say that they are awesome. I have been using the nickels now for about 2 weeks and I'm in love. They have a very mid forward tone and are not harsh up top....plenty of bottom end too. They are solid nickel (I believe) and not just nickel plated. AND so far, they are lasting. This is good.

The Prez should be chiming in soon.

With regards to strings: I am a self proclaimed "string opportunist" not to be confused with a "string whore" who will play anything. I choose to play what intrigues me at that particular time. I am more partial to my amp and playing style than strings. Steel or Nickel, I can make them all work on my Spector......almost all....lol

Unfortunately, he is allergic to nickel though so he can't really say too much about them. He did play my NS-5XL a bit which had them on there and he really did like them though so if he wasn't allergic to them, I am sure he would be using them also :)
