I remember making it out from the city pretty late and being pissed that I missed Fear Factory. The Pantera set was insane. We were way back opposite of the stage in the stands so we weren't down in it. Thought Manson's set was cool too. Ozzy seemed boring at the end.

Ah, so you were back by the second stage. I couldn't hear a thing from that stage since I was kind of in front of it but on the side. Kind of stunk because the were some great bands that played there. I think powerman 5000 and machine head played that stage if I am not mistaken.

I didn't think you were the daredevil type and I think other "substances" played a big role in that guy jumping, lol.

IMO/E it depends on the bass. Lighter strings usually give lighter tension. On necks that aren't super strong, there's less pull on the neck with lighter strings which allow the neck to be straighter and allows for a better, lower setup.

The basics *taken from this page... are:

1. Everything else being the same, pitch increases as tension increases;

2. Everything else being the same, tension increases as scale length increases;

3. Everything else being the same, tension increases as unit weight increases, thus a heavier gage string will be under greater tension as a lighter one of the same length tuned to the same note.

IMO/E it depends on the bass. Lighter strings usually give lighter tension. On necks that aren't super strong, there's less pull on the neck with lighter strings which allow the neck to be straighter and allows for a better, lower setup.

That's why I said on a given bass (i.e. all other factors being equal in our scenario).
It's not about this bass vs. that bass at all.
Simple physics in a controlled scenario make the original point of contention (lighter=lower action) untrue.

And there's this thing called a truss rod......
If your neck/truss rod is so weak you can't get a proper setup with heavier strings....get a better bass!

Exactly.
And that greater tension means that higher gauge string will have a smaller eliptical movement to produce that given note.
This will mean the less clearance needed for that smaller eliptical movement will allow for lower action before fretbuzz in the given scenario (i.e. all other factors being equal).

Although that site and info is somewhat dated (Circle K strings are ROTFLTAO at the "D'Addario being the only manufacturer to provide tensions for it's strings" statement), and the string tension/pitch formulas are correct, it doesn't really touch on the point of "action" and why it can be lower or higher due to a particular gauge difference in a given scenario.

I generally dislike the whole screaming metal thing, but Pantera is just too good to dislike!

Darrell and Rex were just phenomenal together, brutal.

Actually Rex was the average guy in the bunch. At 19 and playing bass for less than a year I was playing his stuff. I couldn't do that for Cliffs or Ellefson's bass lines. We would have tons of bass players that could pull off the bass parts but to find a guitarist to pull of Diamonds part was a lot harder. The guy would have to be playing over 5 years or more. Plucking fingers would need speed but the fretting hand had little going on.

Not me. We play in E, drop D, E flat & even drop C, and I use D'Addario ProSteels, .45 - 1.00 gauge on all my basses, for every tuning.
I dig in hard with my right hand (both finger style & picking), but I use a very light touch on my fretting hand, and I've never experienced any "farting out" or any other issues from running lighter gauge strings.

Thats what I use now, recommended by my luthier. I use to use 107 for my E....But I received Precious with that gauge and liked it.....so 45-100 for me now too.

It's a matte euro lx.....it does have an EMG BQC pre so a step up in theory from the tone pump....I just could not get my tone.....messed with the Thunderfunk 550 and the BQC......color me yellow.....for pissed! Lol

Have you tried messing with different combinations of the DIP switches in the control cavity? There are four different EQ curves available....

He said BQC not the tonepump! I'll take everyones Trim pot tonepumps if you all think they are that bad, I love em and gasp HZ's too!
