SPECTOR® Club - Part 47

Actually Rex was the average guy in the bunch. At 19 and playing bass for less than a year I was playing his stuff. I couldn't do that for Cliffs or Ellefson's bass lines. We would have tons of bass players that could pull off the bass parts but to find a guitarist to pull of Diamonds part was a lot harder. The guy would have to be playing over 5 years or more. Plucking fingers would need speed but the fretting hand had little going on.
Or Rex has always been one to play for the song... I think that is the case, even now he isn't doing anything groundbreaking, just very SOLID
Please explain....Solid maple wings?...Tone pump???...Lets fix this.
If it was solid maple with TP he would not be having probems
It's a matte euro lx.....it does have an EMG BQC pre so a step up in theory from the tone pump....I just could not get my tone.....messed with the Thunderfunk 550 and the BQC......color me yellow.....for pissed! Lol

Wow, the 3 worse things combined in 1 bass....Matte finish instead of Gloss...there goes the PiNG factor....Lx instead of Solid maple....:bawl:....and the Tonepump?....wow. no wonder....Get that solid maple on ebay and install a Haz....Welcome to Paradise my boy!!!:bassist::bassist::bassist:
I would want to agree with you, but many have gotten the LX to sound great (Rex) :spit:

He said BQC not the tonepump!:ninja: I'll take everyones Trim pot tonepumps if you all think they are that bad, I love em and gasp HZ's too!
BQC IMHO is the culprit, lol. I'm with you Zitch, I love me some TP and I like the HZs too
I have not screwed around with the dip switches as it had been working fine for me.

I said three full threads just to SUMMARIZE.......the full story will take over 10 threads! LOL

I struggle with a gloss neck since I have been a Old School Warwick player for so long......:ninja:

Yes BQC......not a bad pre
Oh no! What happened?!?! :bassist:
I have no idea what happened!!!!!!!!!!!:spit:

Jeff-----I think I am a DC guy and I want to try the 18 volt HAZ
Gloss bass with matte or oil neck would be ideal... Jeff is surely right about the Ping factor
I have a Rebop 5 that I upgraded with EMG DCs and a BQC very recently. Its in great shape and I am selling it for $700......honestly without trying to throw a sales pitch, its got about $350 worth electronics/pickups upgrade and thats just parts cost..........PM me if ya like :hiding::bassist:

This is a seriously awesome option

Best to toss all the Fortes too...

Man, I guess I have a double whammy then :)

SOLID is where it's at, flash is for guitar pickers. So many tend to overplay now a days. IMO

Solid Alder with a solid color finish would sound great also. From listening to different models those sound killer.

Ok, first off, I'm now playing with a band in which there is just a single guitar coming through a Marshall. I have to bring some lows to round things put, especially during solos. In my previous band, there were two guitarists and I had to fight to be heard at times because the Mesa and carvin v3 would creep down into my frequencies. In my previous band the Spector could be used as it had this ping and cut you all talk of. I need a ROUNDER tone now with full bass.

Having said that, the matte finish or an oil finish is a good option, especially since the gloss adds Ping.....and I'm not a fan of the tone pump as I pretty much keep my pre flat and let my bass amp do the tone shaping. I miss my 15s and lead sled rig......I'm going to compare the Euro to the Warwick Streamer Jazzman I have played for the last 6+ years next week to see what's up.......or maybe it's time to break the stage rig out of storage???? However my Thunderfunk 550B and Aguilar db112 and 112nt should do the trick????

Agreed.

I started playing when I was 13 (I'm 38 now) and I'd say it took me a good 8-9 years to finally get to a point where I realized I needed to play for the song rather than individual glory. I started out quick learning all the Metallica and Megadeth I could in my first couple years. I had chops early on but not a lot of wisdom to go with them.

Someone might listen to the bass parts I've just done on our forthcoming release and think - "he's not bad, just adequate, etc." I picked my spots. I'm playing in a band with two guitars, keys and full orchestration at times. It wouldn't work if the bass was all over the place doing whatever. I play for the songs.

The biggest compliment I got was from our keyboardist, a much younger guy, who was mixing and assembling everything. I turned in my tracks and he didn't have any notes. He just told me I nailed it perfectly with timing, and did just the right amount of melodic flares and fills. That made me feel good. I don't want to be seen as an overplayer.

Now in cover bands? That's a different story. I will do the most ridiculous bass fills at the end of stuff like Journey or Bon Jovi just to amuse myself. :)

IMHO, flash bass playing is only truly effective & appreciated when the bassist can hold a solid & grooving foundation, & then throws in a few tasty ripping licks through out the course of the evening.
Flash should be used like garlic in cooking - a little goes a very long way, but it can take the dish over the top if used sparingly.

If a rounder tone is what you're after then, yeah, I'd say DC's are the way to go. That and the 18V give you a big, huge, round low end with enough bass that'll make the last row feel like they need to drop a deuce. :bassist:

I am doing some bass tracks for a instrumental project for a friend. http://www.reverbnation.com/matthewhoward , he has sent me the guitar tracks and he has someone that is replacing the dig drums with live drums. The tracks I have with the live drums so far sound 200% better and gives me something to play to. After we are going to play some shows as a three pice so I will have to really be able to support the rhythm. We got together last weekend and the Kramer really filled the void. We'll see next time we are able to work together how the Wimbish plays out.

This is almost certainly why I preferred my NS-5XL to the Forte w/Haz when I compared them straight up.

I'm telling you, I think its the BQC. No offense, i think it is a cool pre, but especially since you like a flat EQ... I think the TP would be giving what you are lacking here. at any rate, are you practicing in a different room than normal? have you spent time EQing with the guitarist to get the mix right? Even with my nontrim TP equipped oil EuroLX I was never lacking for a big round, yet cutting, tone. We all have off nights :bassist:
