Actually Rex was the average guy in the bunch. At 19 and playing bass for less than a year I was playing his stuff. I couldn't do that for Cliffs or Ellefson's bass lines. We would have tons of bass players that could pull off the bass parts but to find a guitarist to pull of Diamonds part was a lot harder. The guy would have to be playing over 5 years or more. Plucking fingers would need speed but the fretting hand had little going on.

Yeah that's why I said together, Rex isn't the most technical player but he really clicked into the groove with the main man Darrell, so together they were freaking awesome. Not the best bassist, but with their powers combined :D

I started playing when I was 13 (I'm 38 now) and I'd say it took me a good 8-9 years to finally get to a point where I realized I needed to play for the song rather than individual glory. I started out quick learning all the Metallica and Megadeth I could in my first couple years. I had chops early on but not a lot of wisdom to go with them.

Someone might listen to the bass parts I've just done on our forthcoming release and think - "he's not bad, just adequate, etc." I picked my spots. I'm playing in a band with two guitars, keys and full orchestration at times. It wouldn't work if the bass was all over the place doing whatever. I play for the songs.

The biggest compliment I got was from our keyboardist, a much younger guy, who was mixing and assembling everything. I turned in my tracks and he didn't have any notes. He just told me I nailed it perfectly with timing, and did just the right amount of melodic flares and fills. That made me feel good. I don't want to be seen as an overplayer.

Now in cover bands? That's a different story. I will do the most ridiculous bass fills at the end of stuff like Journey or Bon Jovi just to amuse myself. :)

Flash should be used like garlic in cooking - a little goes a very long way, but it can take the dish over the top if used sparingly.

I had the chance to meet Billy Sheehan a few years back and watched him sit in with a classic rock band I know. Not only did he sing very well, but he was the perfect example of keeping the groove going and throwing in just the right amount of flash that didn't step on the song. I was really impressed.

When I look at demo's and Youtube vids on basses, they never show how a bass sits in a mix and holds the rhythm. We all know how the top end cuts and slaps on every bass but, then you get to Jamie's situation. Not enough real world examples.

I want to agree to disagree:smug: To ping or not to ping that is the question. My Forte is being refinished. Obviously I could choose the finish. In my humble experience the gloss finish "ping" can be heard unplugged. Plug the bass in and there is so much other stuff going on that you will not be able to hear it. In a matte poly finish the clear coat is not buffed to a mirror like shine. There is still clear coat there. Just not polished. I don't believe any of the colored mattes are actual oil finishes. I chose matte poly, though I reserve the right to change my mind and gloss that female dog!

I have to say when I got my Euro 435 matte, that thing sounded brighter and more aggressive than either of my gloss Euros, and I still think it's my most aggressive sounding Spector including the NS-5XL, Webster and 435 gloss 18v in my possession.

I think I read something a few months ago on the Spector site about all the new matte finishes being a more durable poly coat than the previous oil hand-rub they used before. I'd imagine that a gloss vs a matte would sound the same, given it's the same material, just buffed vs unbuffed.

That makes sense... I've never played a matte spector, but I promise the oil finish that me and Jeff had is tonally different :) great bass tho!
