Off topic, but all this Platypus talk had me looking for this Bungle performance (one of my all time favorite bands) and thought I'd share it.

So, that said, I'm considering a US 9V Haz in one of my three 4-strings. One is a CRFM (all maple, no gloss), one is a LX gloss, and one is an LX natural. Which would be the ideal candidate for the US 9V once they come off back order?

I need your opinion on which is a better deal.

Spector Rebop $700.00

Or Spector Legend 4 at $260. I would swap the pick ups for EMG TWs and the pre for a EMG BQC as well as have it set up as BEAD.

Bass: $260
Pick ups: $100 - $110 each
Pre: $135.00
Ad setup as well as mod install cost. $200 ish. I could be high or low as I don't know what the actual cost would be.

So the Moded Legend would end up costing me around $800.

In the end, would I have a better bass in the moded Legend compared to the stock Rebop?

Me to generally, but I do admire a lot of the technical playing. The thing about Pantera for me is one word so many metal bands miss "Groove".

Pantera for me was never about Phil or his singing or lyrics, it was those other guys laying down that brutal, unapologetic head bob groove behind him.

From what I have listened to that had been posted here, I'll give them credit for that.

I think Lamb of God has been the only "newer" metal band to have some sort of groove and intensity that Pantera was known for.

What I loved about Pantera is they didn't mess around and gave you the full intensity riffs right out of the gate.

I do respect the musician, they lay down a great riff.

I figured I'd get crap from that.... I never said I disliked them, and I am a huge Rex fan. I just never got into them. But come on, I stood less than a foot from Rex while he was rocking out... that gets me all the cred I need

Have you tried messing with different combinations of the DIP switches in the control cavity? There are four different EQ curves available....

I have not screwed around with the dip switches as it had been working fine for me.

Crap I was hoping for like 5 threads at least...

I struggle with a gloss neck since I have been a Old School Warwick player for so long......

He said BQC not the tonepump! I'll take everyones Trim pot tonepumps if you all think they are that bad, I love em and gasp HZ's too!

On Pantera, I was hooked ever since Headbanger's Ball started using various clips from Vulgar during the lead-ins. I actually got hooked on Prong the same way.

I was aware of the Cowboys record when it first came out but hadn't fully gotten into them yet. When Vulgar hit, I mean wow. One of the perfect metal records of the era for sure. It was the perfect marriage of intensity and ferocity without losing melody. I liked Far Beyond Driven less because I thought they went to far into the rough sound with not enough melody. Trendkill was interesting but again for me a step down. I have Reinventing the Steel but I'm not really familiar with it.

I just wish the Jammit tracks for Vulgar weren't all goofy with tuning (1/4 step down, Hollow 1/2 step) or I'd be playing along with that stuff all the time.

I got hooked on Cowboys From Hell, but you are so right, when VDOP was released, that was truly a new level (pun intended). I'm with you on the Jammit tracks, those 1/4 step drops are a pain, but still fun to play. My pick playing is definitely improving thanks to Jammit with Pantera & Queensryche.

When I'm expecting a package I leave the drive gate open, they know by that I'm there and the two German Shepherds are definitely inside with me and not out front, then I just monitor the security cameras looking for the truck, I can't hear it even if he pulls right up to the house but those dogs can and freak out.

Whoa! A gate?! Security cameras?!?! Nice! The house on 60 Acres we're looking at buying has a 1/2 mile driveway with a gate. Yeah our dog goes nuts when she hears the UPS truck but not the FedEx, too funny.

Try moving the dip switches both to the opposite position of the default location. To me, that was the setting I preferred over the others.

Shhh, we need to be careful about saying were are DC guys. Folks tend to look down upon us for that

Oh man, Reinventing the Steel is just an amazing album in my opinion. I knew nothing of it until a few months ago and that is my goto one to listen to now. Rex was playing pretty much all 5 strings at that point too so there really aren't any crazy tunings on that album since most are a step down but they still do their normal slightly flat thing that they have always done.

That's a solid solution right there.... look no further!!!

Yup, that is the best solution in my book since it's already done there with the DC's and BQC.

Here's the science: everything and way more than you'd ever want to know about the relationships between weight, tension and scale length.

The basics *taken from this page... are:

1. Everything else being the same, pitch increases as tension increases;

2. Everything else being the same, tension increases as scale length increases;

3. Everything else being the same, tension increases as unit weight increases, thus a heavier gage string will be under greater tension as a lighter one of the same length tuned to the same note.

That's why I said on a given bass (i.e. all other factors being equal in our scenario).
It's not about this bass vs. that bass at all.
Simple physics in a controlled scenario make the original point of contention (lighter=lower action) untrue.

And there's this thing called a truss rod......
If your neck/truss rod is so weak you can't get a proper setup with heavier strings....get a better bass!

And that greater tension means that higher gauge string will have a smaller eliptical movement to produce that given note.
This will mean the less clearance needed for that smaller eliptical movement will allow for lower action before fretbuzz in the given scenario (i.e. all other factors being equal).

Although that site and info is somewhat dated (Circle K strings are ROTFLTAO at the "D'Addario being the only manufacturer to provide tensions for it's strings" statement), and the string tension/pitch formulas are correct, it doesn't really touch on the point of "action" and why it can be lower or higher due to a particular gauge difference in a given scenario.

Well it's Phil Anselmo during the Trendkill days so did anyone really understand him at that point?

I linked it right at the guitar solo so there really aren't any lyrics after that except for him saying "die" about 50 times, LOL. Unless you went back and listened to the whole track.

I might be a little out of the loop here, but what all has been revealed about the Rebop MM bass so far? I'm quite interested in picking one up when they hit the market, but I'm really not wanting the blue finish as my Euro 5 is Blue also. Are there going to be other finishes available without custom finish? What is the up charge on going custom? How much is it going to be compared to the $1600 for a new Rebop, and how long is the wait gonna be? I'd love to get another bass ASAP but can really hold off for the MM if it'll be worth if.
