I honestly had some concerns before the show.... In lower volume rehearsal and practice at home, this bass is REALLY "bassy" compared to my Modulus and MTD... I had concerns that it wouldn't cut. AND the bass friggin' weights almost 12lbs!!!

In any case, I am more of a metal guy, but we were hired to do a Halloween party for an older crowd (50-70). We scrambled and learned easy stuff like Folsom County, Sweet Home Chicago, Earth Angel and the usual Sweet Home Alabama, Mustang Sally, Brown Eyed Girl, etc. Great gig and we had the dance floor packed all night.

Anyhoo... The bass sounded tight as hell and cut like a knife. Really, really impressed with the tone for this type of music. I am sold on Spectors now. Killer tone!

P.s. why the hell do they have to be so heavy?:confused: I know the bridge is a beast and the maple wings are heavy, but 12lbs?:spit: surprisingly, it balanced very well on the strap and didn't hurt my back at all.

That's awesome! My former Forte 5 weighed in at 10.5#. I heard the solid usa brass bridge weighs close to 4#'s it self?! Then solid maple wings, 35" three piece rock maple Neckthru...it's a beast! Strings weigh 1#. It all adds up quick!

Jeff - there are a couple of clean 'Berger XL2s on the Bay right now, priced in the $2200 range, but if you sell that blue Kramer, we will require you to undergo a mandatory psych evaulation.... :hiding:

Next time you think of selling that bass, just go bang your head against the wall until the urge passes... :D

The Kala I played actually sounded pretty good, but being in a metal band, that bass would not work at all for my style of music, and I'd rather have my testicles pounded flat with a wooden mallet than to be seen onstage with one of those....things.

Anyone know if the Legend Dan Briggs plays is stock? The Spector site lists it as a Legend 5 Custom which would mean it has the set neck but I am curious if he has the stock pickups and pre in it. He gets a totally monstrous tone so I am just wondering. I know his head is a Sunn 300T and the cabinet is an Ampeg SVT 8x10 but I cannot seem to find out more detail of this bass.

im almost positive his is stock. but i cannot recall from when i saw them live. i know he tunes his bass down quite far. with his B string being something like a low G.

Yeah, when I saw them, i was on the opposite side of the stage so I couldn't get a good look at his bass. Just curious if he has the EMG 3 band pre and if the pickups are HZ's. man, I can only imagine how thick his B string is to go that low.

yeah im not sure on the preamp. i wouldn't doubt that it is all stock. i read once that his B string is a .145 D'addario chrome set. i know part of his tone is the flatwounds too.

Not interested in that XL that one is not in the condition of my bass and it has ran the gauntlet for a couple of months on ebay. No one is interested in that one and the other one is fretless. :bassist:

I think I may be a believer. I've been used to traditional tension for so long that it was weird at first. But it just feels so much easier to play both from a picking and fretting standpoint. I played through some of our original stuff as well as some DT, Rush and Queensryche on Jammit and places were I'd typically feel a little picking fatigue did not happen. Normally I have to push myself a bit to get through 6:00 but it played like butter now.

And let's not forget about the sound - seems like the perfect cross between nickel and steel. Nice fully body but still bright with bite, And they feel smoother than pretty much every steel I've played.

I have two other sets I still need to try on my 5LX for A standard and the 435 I got from bassgiant for drop C. But unless something goes worse with those, I think all my Spectors are going to wear these. Just waiting for the next coupon code to stock up.

+1 and when they still sound awesome 6 months later, wait till you try the .150 for B/A or the .158 for straight A.

I have fallen in love with this Kramer NS-2 and I would love to be able to keep it, but something has to go.

So I talked with Jeff and Steve to make sure they were okay with it but wanted to ask all of you also and get your blessing to put up the Ian Hill for sale (I have the perfect person in mind) so that I can keep the Kramer. If I cancel the Hazlab and black bridge I have ordered for it along with the shipping to my guy to do the work, black tuners and money to have the work done, it's about even.

Jeff said he wants me to have the better bass, the one I want and to him he knows it would be the Kramer. The big thing is I don't want anyone to think I am not appreciative because I am more appreciative than you will ever know. Here's the thing: one person who did this for me has the smallest problem with it, I will not do it and put the Kramer up intead. If you have any problem with it at all, please just IM me, no reason needed, and I will not sell it.

sorry im late on this. chris, you do what you feel is necessary. family and yourself are first no matter what. basses come and go, like many have. and patrick nailed it with his response. keeping the better of the 2 is a no brainer to me. we know you have the best of intentions and youre doing whats best for your family. so you im cool with what you do. my deepest condolences for you and your family about your dad. hang in there brother! it'll be alright. god bless, chris!

I had a Kala for a while and after listening to my band bitch about how dumb it looked, I used it at an outdoor gig (metal and heavier rock) for Pearl Jam's Alive. 400-ish people and they loved it.

The bass sounded really good. A bit hard to play, but a cool bass. I think I have a pic somewhere.

I sold it based on how dumb it looked.:hiding:

Just to be clear, I meant no offense to those of you who like the Kala U-Basses, and they do have impressive upright-like tone much as their 80's Ashbory counterparts did. I just can't stand the way they look and feel. Thus my sarcastic poke at them earlier.

If I remember right he actually plays an NS-2005, stock iirc. I've also read that he uses halfrounds, but on d'addario's site he's listed as using prosteels. There's a lot of conflicting info on his gear though. The only thing that's certain is that he uses an old sunn tube amp.

Haha.....well Richmond is getting the beginnings of Sandy, temp has drop, wind has picked up and it's raining. That means its time to mix a drink, grab a Spector and the old pandora and jam a little. Schools are closed here tomorrow already......
