.....I'm not happy with how fast I go through strings.... I'm going to try the denatured thing... Any tips on that?

Donny, if you are referring to the process of cleaning your strings with rubbing alcohol, there's nothing to it.
Just wet the corner of a cotton cloth with rubbing alcohol, wipe each string from bridge to nut 5 - 6 times, and then wipe again with a clean dry corner of the cloth.

IME, one of the best things you can do to extend the life of your strings is to religiously wipe them down after each show or rehearsal with a plain dry cloth.
Do the denatured thing about once a month, and once you feel the strings are nearing the end of their life, take them off & boil them in water for ten minutes or so - this only works once, but will give you another 4 - 6 hours of play time.

Haha.....well Richmond is getting the beginnings of Sandy, temp has drop, wind has picked up and it's raining. That means its time to mix a drink, grab a Spector and the old pandora and jam a little. Schools are closed here tomorrow already......

Same here. We lost power overnight but surprisingly National Grid restored it about an hour ago. I doubt it will last but I'm taking full advantage of the use of the coffee pot. :hyper: I had to hit the grocery store yesterday with pretty much everyone and their brother (loves me some good panic shopping). They were actually pretty-well stocked though there seemed to be a run on, of all things, tonic water. I see that new englanders have their priorities straight! I have enough gin and limes to ride out whatever Sandy deposits on us! :bassist:

(And in all seriousness, stay safe guys, esp. all of you in the mid-Atlantic. I grew up in Jersey so I'm very much hoping that everyone back in my hometown (Flemington) gets through the storm safely.)

Sounds great.

In a side note, I'm not happy with how fast I go through strings.... I'm going to try the denatured thing... Any tips on that?

Hey Donny,

I let them soak in denatured alcohol for 24-48 hours. You can go to Home Depot and in the paint dept. get a bucket WITH a fitted top on it. Coil your strings up and set them in there, let them soak.

I have since made a long pipe out of PVC sealed. It's sealed tight on one side and the other side's cap comes off. I have some hooks mounted on the underside of that cap and I just hook the tuning peg side on them and slide them down my PVC pipe (which is filled with DA and about 40" long. A little easier and the theory is they get a little cleaner because you don't have to coil them.

I know there are some people that don't think it works but I'm here to tell ya it does! It may not bring them back to brand new but it'll get them to about 90% zing factor. I usually can get 3-4 cleanings before the string is totally dead. Like Whole Home DVR's and Spector's, it's changed my life.:D

Is that what he was referring to? I had not heard of soaking the strings in alcohol - just wiping them down like I do.
I wonder if it is any more/less effective than the routine I've been using....

+1, soaking gives the alcohol time to break up the oils and grim that builds up on the strings and does not rust the cores like boiling does.

Thanks man. The Spector site said he uses a Legend custom which is why I thought that but looking at pictures of his bass, I can now see the difference. Now I need to see what pre the NS-2005 has in it. Just curious since his tone is just amazing.

I have been listening to these guys all weekend and just love their music. I am so glad I got to see them at the Summer Slaughter tour since I am still new with them but their show was just amazing. The odd thing was, Dan faced the drummer pretty much the whole time and wasn't out front like the rest of the band. I have watched a bunch of live clips on YouTube though and he doesn't seem to do that in those. Maybe he was having technical issues.

It's a Aguilar OBP-1 (if remember correctly) with HZ pups. Fully carved NS alder body, thin quilt top, reinforced three piece neck-through, brass bridge and nut. They weight between 10 and 11 Lbs. I put a Tone Pump in one of mine and it sounds much better than the OBP-1.

My apologies for the mix up with Dan and which bass he plays.

For the record, his amber neck-thru that he uses on the "Buried" albums and tours is an NS-20005 model.
Neck-thru, Korean-Made.

Because of the following he has and the artists who play models no longer offered are not grouped with the current available instruments (at the time we were developing the system for how Spector Artists would have profiles attached to the page which coincides with the model they play), it was decided to place him with the Legend Custom because it was the closest thing available to what he does play.

Dan is a great bassist, very visible and hard-working. And those who really follow his work are very loyal. So it was out of respect that we kept him in the limelight, not any confusion regarding what he plays.

He also has a Euro5LX that he's used on other recordings/projects.

Well fix it man!!!! :) You know I am just kidding dude. Makes sense about the site and since I am not one that can identify the body styles super quick like everyone else, I just go with what it says, LOL.

Eww, is that standard in the bass? I actually have an OBP-1 laying here doing nothing since I ripped it out of my NS-JH5 but good idea installing a Tone Pump in yours. No offense to people that are fans of the OBP-1 but when that pre was in my JH5, the tone was pure mud to my ears. I would be curious to hear an OBP-2 though.

My black Spector likes new strings, the other two spectors are good with "broken in" strings. I like "broken in" strings on my modulus and P-bass as well.

I haven't tried the denatured alcohol method because boiling them works for me. Takes 10 min, no chemicals, and I don't have to build an "apparatus" to make it work. The result is new sounding strings for another 3-4 weeks.

Many report problems with rust, I haven't had that problem. My theory is because I use DR Stainless Steel lo riders on that bass. Stainless steel doesn't rust because its stainless steel.

If I were to have problems with rust, I'd try alcohol method.:bassist:

Since I live right past the borderline of a evacuation area in NYC and I have been know to have strange disasters happen to me. I have all my USA Spectors packed away in a upper inside closet hopefully as waterproof as possible.

On the positive side, I finally installed the Brass nut on my Fretless NS-2A and have her all setup. So hopefully I will get my fretless chops up this weekend with the battery powered Tascam GB-10.

Everyone on the East Coast stay safe, dry during Hurricane Sandy.

Man, are those Spector's or bodies? :D Only a New Yorker would know how to do that, hahahaha.

It's been that way before a big storm up here since the Blizzard of 78. I went out yesterday and bread and bottled water were in short supply. I hope Grid can keep the power on for a while so I can keep working. If not it's their loss since I work their account for CSC. I could use some down time!

Stay dry and safe everyone!

How many of you actually wash your hands before you pick up your basses to play? Sounds silly but clean hands equal less immediate grime. I always wipe down my strings after I play too. I just ordered some circle k 112s to try.....Thanks to Mike for letting me try his...they feel great and sound cool too!

I wash mine all the time. I'm OCD about it. Face it, you're a flats player. That's the tone your prefer. :) It's written all over your face.

Anyone know if the legend Dan Briggs plays is stock? The Spector site lists it as a Legend 5 Custom which would mean it has the set neck but I am curious if he has the stock pickups and pre in it. He gets a totally monstrous tone so I am just wondering. I know his head is a Sunn 300T and the cabinet is an Ampeg SVT 8x10 but I cannot seem to find out more detail of this bass.

Man! Dan really makes that NS-20005 growl! Makes you think he put either a TP or USA 9V circuit and active EMG's DC's. Thanks for sharing this John! That's some awesome instrumentals. Love the Spector solo at the start! :D :bassist:
