Mesa's are nice. I have a M6 I am debating on moving soon though. I found the aguilar db750 to be a one trick pony when I owned one. Live it did not work for me. The mesa big block 750 got muddy and lost in the mix live for me. The M 6 and 9 are beasts live in the mix.

Donny, you have me about ready to order some of these. I do like the circle k's i got in a balanced set but have always been a d'addario nickel kinda guy, even though I dabble in DR strings.

I'n not so sure I agree about a difference in a live setting between preamps. I find my tone difference to be in the amp I am using , however a generally don't tweak my on board pre that much live except maybe a little in a soloing situation?

I will actively disagree with the pre being different if you are playing a large venue.......then I think it all falls on the FOH soundman.......for the crowd........but honestly......the genral concert goer couldn't tell the difference between tones like we tend to.........lol

And I love ya Lee......but I had to disagree for fun.....:D ADD----I dont play through a 300 watt tube amp........so my opinion might not count at all! LOL

I have had both the spector usa preamp equipped basses and I'm with super.......i prefer the DCs equipped with the 18 volt pre..........my 2 cents.

I think the preamp vs amp discussion is really based on the player. I love GK amps but at the end of the day, I have tailored my tone to be my tone before my amp, after my pedal board. I have FOH many years in my past so I approached it that way.

I missed the aggie vs the tonepump, but I got the Haz right, as did just about everyone. That tells me something about that preamp. That its not just a bunch of fanboy fawning. :)

I've seen blind comparisons on this board where people couldn't accurately tell the difference between a maple board and a rosewood board, hell, dan atkinson did a test where some people couldn't reliably tell the difference between a Jazz bass and a notty pine 2X4 with two pickups stapled to it. :D

But we can pick a preamp out. Rock on.

I can go that route too, and go to the next step and say, people know its me whether I am playing a Spector, Warwick, Wal, Ibanez, or Squier...........LOL

But thats probably true for most of us who have been playing a while, especially us older guys Donny (young buck).........LOL

You can call me old........you can even call me Geezer........I'll take that too......

Am average concert goer doesn't know if you're playing a P bass, a piccolo or a Spector for that matter. I'm talking about the player hearing and feeling the difference. The tone you enjoy is a softer, pillowy low end and not near as tight and crisp as I like it. For me it's all about the EQ points on the tone controls. And of course your opinion counts silly boy.

Again, I think this is just one of those things we like to dissect for kicks and giggles. All the tones are slices of awesome.

Funny how you describe the tone I like...........I always thought of tube amps being pillowy......lol. I find my tonal preferences changes though and they have come more into your range of sound with the most recent ltd thumb aquisition........it zings like nothing else with that p and double J.......which is a big departure from typical thumb electronics.........but yeah the Spector I play the most is like getting run over by a cement truck! Boom!!!! :help:

Ya I agree with you 99% lol I'd call you geezer but you'd forget ;). I may not have 30 years experience but 15 is pretty good lol. And I always surround myself with more experienced players such as yourself.

Sell me your gk amp and I'll send you a set of those strings in your gauge of choice :)

It depends on how you run your tubers. I've never had any that weren't tight and right!

You know what I mean though....I don't mean pillowy in a bad way, just Uhhh, errr rounder, yeah that's it.
