Yes you can tell by the serial number. You'd need to contact Pj Rubal, VP of Stuart Spector Designs, he can look up the serial# and tell you what it is and year made. Also, go to here...Link Removed

I got mine on a fluke. I had started playing again after a long hiatus and decided to get an active bass for the first time. Shades of Rip Van Winkle, I know. I did some research, found the Spector Club on TB and that reissue model run was selling then. I never expected the quality I received for such a low price. They originally were marked at $1999 MSRP but street price was $899 with an OHSC at Sam Ash.

My only guess was that it sold slowly because it was a JJ and not Spector's usual PJ.

Someone once commented in these pages that it sounds thin in a large venue but I'm not likely to experience that. I will say through an SVT in a studio it growls for days. I'd like to hear a sound clip of it next to LimaGuy's various NS and Forte clips.

I will say that the sound of the NS-2JA-R is different from the NS-2. Not better or worse, just different. If you mess with the eq on it you can get a nice tone out of it. As far as it being thin live, again, the eq can fix it. I make sure that when I use it, I try and get it to sound similar to my NS-2s. Here are 2 live tracks I did with a rap metal band, both through my Tech 21 Landmark 300 & Hartke HyDrive 410 & 115. The first one is dirtied up, but the second is clean.

I took the fretless to Corner Music over my lunch hour to try out some amps. Corner is a GREAT little shop here in Nashville that caters to all levels from beginner to the seasoned professional! Just cool little shop with a really nice selection of instruments/amps.

First, I tried a ToneHammer 350 with an Aggie 1x12 and it sounded REALLY good! Clean tone with but a bit too "tubby" sounding for my tastes.

Second, I tried the BIG rig...an Ampeg SVT Heritage head with a Heritage 8x10 cab. This combo obviously has earth shattering lows and had a sweet "airy" quality to the mids! Unfortunately as a whole I just couldn't get into it. I had high expectations for it, but was disappointed in it as a whole.

Finally, I went back to the ToneHammer350, but with an Aggie 2x10. All I can say is I'm in love!! Some for of ToneHammer,350 or 500, and a 2x10 is what I will be looking for...and eventually a 4x10 to pair with it for the 6x10 experience! The ToneHammer just has a LOT of tonal variety and I am realizing I like the 'tight/punchiness' that a 10 inch speaker provides!

I also tried a few other basses. A new MIA Fender Jazz, EBMM stingray, Mike Lull 5'er, Brubaker and a Lakland 55-94. They didn't hold a candle to the feel and sound of the Spector with the Alex Webster profile!!

The Spector was the star of the shop! You'd think the customers walking thru the shop had never seen a bass that wasn't a Fender/EBMM/Lakland before! Everyone gawkd at it and complemented me on how beautiful the bass was and the amazing tone that I was getting out of it. Several of them asked if it was mine or the stores...I think they were disappointed when I said it was mine because they wanting to give it a whirl. Some of them were 'stalking' the bass dept waiting for me to put it back on the wall. :D If I had more time I would have definitely shared the Spector love and converted a few folks!! :D

Moral of the story...SPECTOR'S RULE!

Awesome! I've been interested in the ToneHammer as well. But like you...cash starved for now...but not for long. :D But must buy a NS-5XL WCR first. :bassist: And some firearms, crossbows...:D

No problem. I'm thinking of moving mine, only because I'm not completely in love with the neck. I'm so used to the Kramer era necks that the JA-R just isn't as comfortable for me. It does get a pretty killer tone though, even with the BT in it.

Coming from a Telecaster I love the NS-2JA-R neck! It took me a while to get used to it.

I'll be curious as to what you get for yours. I'll sell mine if and when I move up to a neck-through. I'm even tempted by a Wimbish neck.
