Hey Jeff,

It's really hard for me to say because the bass I had with the ebony board was buckeye (tonally neutral) with a walnut back. That bass though was very warm and had more of a mid focused tone. AND the ebony looked cool as sh1t.

Here it is:

So would you say it's the combination of the sum of parts that really makes the tone of the instrument?

Yes Lee, it does look great! I don't know why you let it go, and I'm glad you have it back.

And yeah, the tone is the sum of all the parts. Different woods combined with different electronics. Although for this discussion we can fix the electronics at P/J pups w/ USA 9v. (Standard NS-2 config.)

My NS-2 will be solid maple w/ebony fingerboard. I'm thinking the solid maple will add it's own tonal shading also.

I have to admit I chose the ebony purely for looks. I really like the look.

Lee, do you not have Big Earl anymore?? That bass is soooo freakin sweet! I agree that ebony looks awesome!

Big Earl has gone back home to roost. The original owner contacted me (his name is under the bridge) and wanted it back....I obliged. That was/is one great sounding bass.

That's really the thing about the BEM and the ebony - the look.

I came very close to ordering my 6XL with ebony. I expect if I ever do another US neck thru build it will be ebony. The fretless will be, but there's something about those abalone Spector crowns on an ebony board.

My NS-2 will come with an ebony board. Anybody able to speak to what tonal shade that gives as opposed to the standard pau ferro?

I'm wanting you to tell me what the combination of the Maple body with the Ebony board speaks, I know it will look nice and we have also been assisted with a proper maintenance plan (plus you will be with Todd who will set this baby up and show you some things)....I just hope I can stop in! lol

Pretty much, I don't think you have to worry about it sounding bad.

exactly. remember that ebony has been used for centuries on double basses, violins and other stringed instruments. no reason to be afraid of ebony.

Hey...How's the Coda been sounding Bunk?

I unfortunately have not had much time to play any of the basses in the past week or so. Very busy with other stuff. I'm hoping to get a lot of time with the basses this weekend. Still need to put the 603 strings on all of them, but I want to do sound clips with the CK strings on first so I can hear the difference in the clips. I will post links when complete.

We just got this bass in and I was going to post it up for you all to drool over and hopefully buy.... but within 6 hours of listing it for sale yesterday a lucky guy stole it from ya'll!

Notice the purple inlays? We call this beauty "Plum Crazy".

Ahh that's the other ultraviolet 5 string I heard about. Beautiful.

I'd be really curious to hear that thing vs. mine which is also 9v but has the soapbar P and J. Theoretically it should sound just the same I would think especially since the 40P5 has the same reverse P as Spector normally uses, I believe.

And it also lets me know what mine would look like with black hardware. I think I like the gold a hair more but that looks great.

EDIT: Just saw the date on the headstock at the link - right around the same time as mine! They're brothers!

I think the gold will look better also Bunk. Def compare the 603's to what you have. The low tension didn't do it for me and they don't detune well. But, that's just my ear and I need tension cause I beat the strings. They might be better with a pick player.

Still think I'm the only one getting the UV w/ the ebony fingerboard. Like this...

This is your bass with the neck from Todd's Purple Daze and the bridge from Patrick's Blue Dream. Not the best Photoshop work but you get the idea.

I got a new agular preamp yesterday and had it installed in my euro lx4 by about 1am so I had to wait till this morning to try it out but it was worth it, I love the new tone with the aggie it still has the growl of a spector but it's deeper with more low end growl and less mid range rasp but that can be brought back because my bass also has a midrange control now as well as a single volume and a blend control just how I like it, I also had the volume knob wired with a push/pull switch to bypass the whole thing. I finaly have a bass that I don't want to change at all, it's been personalized for me.
I wasn't shure how the knobs would look but I like it though I still might get a gold set and put these on my zebop when I upgrade that pre, I was planning on using and emg bqc setup on that one since it's getting new 35px and twx pickups with the bqc the whole thing would be almost plug and play and a little cheeper than the aggie but now that ive heard the aggie i'm thinkin I want another one of those for the zebop. so now that I have an aggie for comparison can anyone whose had bolth tell me what differences I might here with the emg bqc preamp??

I wonder what the switches do? I know ThisSNsucks said one was supposed to be series switch for the P pickups, but can you do that with EMG's?
