On the board talk again....I've owned all three boards (BEM, ebony and Pau) on NS 2's and the good news is at the end of the day (tone wise) they all sounded like........like.....NS 2's. We're all so good at this dissection (and it's totally fun and useful) but it's all just slivers of awesome.

For those who have yet to see it. The Spector NS-2A preamp w/ EMG Select P/J setup is back on the EBAY block for $80 buy it now or best offer.
I agree, I was totally afraid of the BEM, because I had played some Fodra's and a Sadwoski with the BEM and thought they were much brigther than the on I got from Lee. I can't speak on the Coda or any other Spector model, but the NS-2 with the BEM even with my neanderthal playing style sounds great. It's is a little more present in the high mids and a throaty bump in the bottom end that made me check to see if I had the B3K on (no sh1t). I could roll the treble up and still stay out of the glass zone. I do run a pretty dark rig and heavy guages but even with the 603's that Lee had on it, wouldn't take it out of my comfort zone. This board with a current 9v Haz takes it into Kramer era with some added lo-mid cut. A con is that I did not like the tone with the J pickup solo'd (the tone thined out quite a bit) but with them blended it is pretty killer.

Hey guys! Soo about two months ago I defretted my Holoflash Spector Legend Classic 5 (Korean model I believe). The defretting process went as planned and came out rather nice but then realized I had some truss rod problems.. soo I took it into my guy and just got it back yesterday!She plays better than ever! Here's a couple pictures I snapped out in the grass.
Let me know what you guys think! I'm pretty excited to have it back, especially since i've been craving some fretless action!

I agree, at first the BEM made me think...What's this???? But as I played it and with Todd setting it up to my playing style I have this baby speaking it's own musical voice and sounding very good....still a NS2 but speaking clear!

Yeah, I guess it was kinda rhetorical. But anyone is welcome to opine.
After playing the Maple board, the maple brings snappy/snarly sound to the notes while ebony seems to add a hi-fi detail. The Pau seems to have a fuller more mid present growl to it. Not a huge difference between the three but comparing the three the Ebony seems the brightest, Maple, Pau. Ebony sounds great on my acoustic and it would be a good choice for jazz instruments. That is probably why Webester prefers it do to the note clarity.

It's really hard for me to say because the bass I had with the ebony board was buckeye (tonally neutral) with a walnut back. That bass though was very warm and had more of a mid focused tone. AND the ebony looked cool as sh1t.

So would you say it's the combination of the sum of parts that really makes the tone of the instrument?
Basically the conclusion I've come to is if you condition/maintain the board regularly, you can't go wrong with any of the...especially if there's a Spector logo on it!

Pretty much, I don't think you have to worry about it sounding bad.
