SPECTOR® Club - Part 66

1. if I'm a founding and/or creative member of group, 99.9% of the time I'm playing what bass I want.

2. if I'm a bassist-for-hire for an artist/group, I playing whatever style bass the person paying me wants me to play! ...same for attire and other requirements!

If you're out to make a living with your instrument, especially in a town full of 'tradition' like Nashville, you need to be flexible to stay financially above water! ...just my 2 cents

I've never really been a hired gun so for better or worse I have not adopted this mentality. I've also been known to not give two ***** about any tradition.

I find projects that align with what I want to do musically and match my philosophy on things. So I fall firmly under your #1.

After 27 years of playing. I Just got my first Spector bass from ynot12 A.K.A - Tony.

I have to say its more beautiful in person than the pics I saw. When I opened up the case it smelled like stepping into a brand new car.

After 27 years of playing. I Just got my first Spector bass from ynot12 A.K.A - Tony.

I have to say its more beautiful in person than the pics I saw. When I opened up the case it smelled like stepping into a brand new car. View attachment 357724

Can anyone tell me what Spector this is ? He says it is a Ns with EMG HZ pickups . It's made in Korea , neck through contruction , about 6 years old . Is the model simply Ns or is there more to the model name ?

I guess I'm just a dumb metalz dood then, since I can't wrap my head around why that would make a difference. Personally, I wouldn't be able to work with someone like that. But I'm glad I gave you an opportunity to mention the gig size and pay.

Being a bassist for hire means you work for them and they dictate the terms of the gig. Unless you're someone like Dave Fowler. He's a known quantity and is hired to do what he does.

But even Dave can't walk out on stage wearing Speedos! Doh!!

Seriously though Bunk, being in an original prog metal band is about as far removed from what MDbass is doing as you can get. And that's OK. In my touring days if my lead singer had turned to me and said "I don't like that Ibanez, you have to play a Fender", we would have had a SERIOUS disagreement. So I understand where you're coming from but...

He's doing it because he loves just to be able to make a good living playing his bass. (crowds and equipment notwithstanding ) And I admire you both for what you are able to do. I gotta do the "real job" thing and squeeze in playing in a copy band where I can.

But I had my "15 minutes" many times over a long time ago, so I say "It's all good!"

I wasn't trying to brag, just providing some perspective as to why in a hired gun scenario it's literally your job to give the artist who've writing your check what they want, whether sonically or aesthetically; Brad did a good job of summing it up as well.

And even as a metal guy I'm sure you an understand how aesthetics play an important role, I've certainly never seen a metal bass player wearing sandals and shorts while playing a 50's P bass

I just didn't appreciate the condescending tone. Crowd size and pay are not indicators of quality to me. Otherwise Katy Perry would be the best music in the world, correct?

It so happens I don't wear sandals or play a 50's P-bass, and you can wax philosophical about whether or not I don't like them because I'm a metal guy, but if I did like them, I would be wearing and playing them. I've had to make too many compromises in other parts of my life, so music is where I take a stand. I don't compromise. And that's why I don't do it for a living or play as a hired gun.

To some people Katie's music is the best in the world. Good, bad, best, worst; it's all in the ear of the beholder. It's all opinion.

Wear and play whatever you want. (except speedos )

I've had to make too many compromises in other parts of my life, so music is where I take a stand. I don't compromise. And that's why I don't do it for a living or play as a hired gun.

No problem - I probably should have kept my mouth shut initially. I was just stunned at the notion someone would actually care how many strings are on your bass from an aesthetic perspective.

I don't know if it's a sore subject, but I tend to have very little tolerance for the commerce end of music and what it can dictate to the artist. But I'm nuts like that.

Very exciting! Are you looking for the dark pau ferro to match the mahogany back in color tone?

Gosh man, you really couldn't have interpreted what I'm trying to say more incorrectly; this whole thing started with me explaining why I only play 4 strings live these days but still keep a 5 string for the studio.

I'm in no way trying to condecend or tell you that anything you're doing is wrong or that I'm somehow above you.

I'm actually a metal head/heavy music guy at heart, and I'm really fortunate to be able to play music for a living and still be able to write for my own projects as well.

I just love playing music, and I'm stoked to be able to represent Spector even when the gig calls for a traditional looking bass.

I'm not a fan of compromise either, and I'd never play a gig with people I didn't like or with music I didn't enjoy playing just for the money; they call it 'playing' music because it's supposed to be fun right?

I really don't want to belabor this any further. I only made my comment after you mentioned your band leader doesn't want 5 strings for aesthetic reasons, which frankly I find laughable. I should have shut up about it so that's my bad.
