Hi all. I am loving my "new to me" Spector Euro that I bought this summer. I have noticed though that the bass will completely kill a 9v battery within a few weeks even if not plugged in. I have gone through 3 batteries already and the bass has really not been played much. Its like the Tone Pump pre amp is always on no matter what. Anyone have any ideas? I understand the preamp was removed by the previous owner and re installed when he sold it but everything looks clean and original inside.

99% sure the problem is this:
The Ground "Black wire" from the Battery and the "Black wire" from the Tonepump are on the wrong place on the input jack. If you swap their places on the input jack it will solve the problem.

When it's wired incorrectly like this, it will work and sound normal but it's like leaving the jack plugged in 24/7.
Which kills the battery every few weeks.

How can you tell what kind of Spector it is just from pictures? A guy on CL has this listed.. What kind is it? What's a good price?

That's a Spector Legend Custom 5. It's a set neck with EMG HZ pickups and has an EMG (I think) three band eq. Looks like the stacked knob is broken. There's volume for each pickup, bass, treble and mid eq.

These are great basses. Great tone. I've had one in a Bubinga top, and sold it for $450.

Quick question for those of you who like to bump up the midrange on their amps (or basses) when playing their Spectors...

What frequency are you boosting and what bass are you playing?

My equalization has shelving adjustments, might be best to send how everything is set...hope this helps!

Low shelving: 0
40: +3
80: +2.5
160: +2.5
340: +5
660: +4
1.3k: 0
2.6k: +5
5k: +2
10k: +2
High shelving: +3

The Ultraviolet/BEM is set at center on both bass and treble.
The Black Cherry/Pau Ferro is set center but I do boost the treble as needed.

You know me so well..

Just read some singer/guitarist's comment on a guy wanting to learn to play bass and asking about the different types. The guy wanted to know the difference between a 4 and 5 string, the nutcase said "People who have more than 4 strings on their bass shouldn't be playing bass!" Made my blood boil. He should have both his musician and man card removed. Shaking my head in disappointment.

Mid switch 4 on my PF-500, and to about 2 o'clock. No idea which frequency that is.
I'm going to have the ability to tweak my bass's midrange once my BQC is installed, though.

On my PF-500 I play with the same mid selection (#4) although I like to dime it. With my SVP-Pro I think I bump out a little lower frequency but I can't remember. (it's still at the tech's ) My bass is a NS2A with MM114 pre. I run my blend in the middle and treble 50%, bass around 65%

On my M6 I recently started using the Voice 5 setting which is a pretty wide band Mid boost across the board. Not sure off the top of my head what the freqs are exactly but I like it with my NS5 which is a little less middy than my Lakland. Oh and then I dip my Mids tone knob to about 10:00 so it's not overly honky.

Legend 5 Custom with either an Aguilar, or EMG EQ. Gold hardware's nice! Don't see that too often on a legend.

Legends sell (I believe) for $700 to $800 new, so used, in good condition, about $400. Less, if you can do it!

Don't flame me, I like EMG pickups and preamps.
Thing still sounds devastating.

I can't believe they actually had that stock pre running that freakin hot.

Here's a question that's probably been posed before but I think deserves a revisit. What do you string your Spector with and why? Interested to see what people's string preferences are.

I'm a DR guy. Hi-beam MR45s on every bass I own with the occasional exception for Black Beauties. Have Hi-Beams on my Euro and they help contribute to a nice bright sound for me. I've found them to be the longest lasting string for those like me that need the new string zing as well.

What do you guys play?
