You guys won't believe this:ninja:...don't faint now;) I actually made my first purchase of ROUND WOUND STRINGS! :hiding::D Jason sent emails out about new products seen at BPL, specifically the "NEW" GHS BOOMER 52's, nickel/iron alloys, $10! I couldn't resist at that price! Those are 4 string sets so I bought a single B string to go with it. These are in limited quantities right now so if you're thinking about trying them...:bassist: Can't wait to try them out on my Coda!:bassist:

Wow - I took a week off, and had 12 pages of stuff to go through here! Now I see what people mean.

The good: Played an open mic Wed. nite at a local bar with my NS-4CRFM. The rhythm guitarist, singer, and myself (bass) from our band are doing an acoustic side-project. I purchased a used Phil Jones Bass Cub to use at the acoustic gigs. I totally see why Superdick is a fan of those amps. This thing is 100W, 2 x 5" speakers, and it is about the size of a shoe box. The guitar and vocals were coming through the house P.A., I was playing with no mic, volume at about 45%, and at one point, they asked me to turn it down a hair. Amazing! I can't believe that amp fills a big room. It's an amazing practice amp, too. Here are the songs we played:

Plush (Stone Temple Pilots)
Snuff (Slipknot / Corey Taylor)
Sober (The Staind acoustic version of the Tool song)
So Cold (Breaking Benjamin - acoustic version)
Creep (Radiohead - acoustic version)
Outside (Staind)

All the songs are pretty mellow; no crazy dynamics.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any pics or video, but we'll be opening a show on 11/23, with one band in between our acoustic set and my band's full electric set. I hope to have my NS-4 back by then, as that one and the Webster will be used in the electric set.

Speaking of my NS-4...

The bad: I e-mailed PJ at Spector this week to find out the status of it, and they don't even have it yet. He did say that they'll make the repair a priority, as the bass is brand new and shouldn't have left the shop with any defects / problems. I have no idea what that means for me or when I'll have it back. This is not good at all.

The ugly: I bought the NS-4 through Atlanta Bass Gallery. Last week I dropped it off there and the tech tried filing the 19th fret to get the dead spot out. When the owner realized they could not fix it, and it had to go back to NY, he promised me he would overnight it THAT DAY to Spector. What he actually did was wait until Monday of this week and shipped it UPS Ground.
My level of confidence in Atlanta Bass Gallery has hit rock bottom. It is a bummer that you can't trust your local (regional) Spector dealer, and I will no longer be doing business there. The NS-4 was shipped to me anyway; it really didn't matter who I ordered it from. I will be using Todd in Tulsa from now on. Some people just get it, and from the posts I've seen on here, he gets it.

Congrats on the gigging opportunities! Sounds like a lot of fun!:bassist:
Does the low end & mids come thru deep & punchy with the Phil Jones 2/5?
Mam oh man, so sorry that you're having a very bad experience with your new NS-4:ninja: not good! I hope you get your new Spector back quickly. I really like what I've been hearing and seeing with ordering thru Todd Cook, from members on here. My next new build will be thru Todd. :)

The Bass Cub is very small, and as such, clips easily. It has a built-in limiter than can be turned on/off and an adjustable threshold.
If you really lay into a note to get that punchy sound, the amp will either clip, or the limiter will compress it. So, the short answer is "no", you don't get a deep/punchy sound from it. However, it has a great preamp in it with standard EQ, two input channels that has a balanced in, so you can plug a powered mic into channel 1, and run vocals and bass through it. Plus, each channel has an input level adjustment, so you can dial back the signal before it has a chance to clip, and use less of the limiter (I HATE compression).
I purchased it from a double bass player that used it for jazz gigs; he bought the PJ Flightcase and had no use for the Cub anymore. I got it specifically for the acoustic gigs; I am ordering a Warwick Alien Deluxe acoustic 5er as well. Whether I run my Spectors or the acoustic through the Cub, it'll be pretty low-key, even if I mic or run it into the P.A. direct for a gig. I would not try using this for a full-on electric gig in a bar. That's what my 600W Mesa Carbine M6 (2x12", 1x15") is for. :D
Other kudos for the Bass Cub: 1/4" headphone jack for private playing, AUX IN for the iPod (you can literally turn it into a headphone amp and play along with songs), balanced XLR out for direct to P.A., and an output for an additional cabinet.
That's a lot of features on a 100W amp that's smaller than a breadbox!

The Bass Cub is very small.....

I tried one of these little beauties at a local store and I was really impressed! For such a tiny thing it can sure give a ton of power. I can imagine it doesn't haul out enough punch for any kind of unmic'd gig but for a practice/small gig amp, I'd have taken one if I didn't find a Peavey MAX115 for just under half price! :D

Your right I don't believe it, what made you go and do something like that? lol
Actually I think it's cool to explore different things and these strings sound like they might be a hybrid and the nickel might help tone down the highs....you will have to report!!!!

The Para Driver does have a lot of boost so I have lowered the volume of my amp and blend in the Tech 21. we have also leveled the channel on the board plus buffered that channels signal...still playing with it in a pre amp mode with DI to the board.

I had to cut a lot of frequencies as well. Problem was, I bought the PDDI for the dirt and grit plus the versatility it had in the studio, and turning the blend down made all the tone go away, so I bought a Darkglass B7K Instead.

I currently have EMG Jazz pickups in the fretless 5, but have been itching to try out some passive Aguilar Hum-Cancelling pickups with the OBP-3. From everything I've seen online, they are just barely different sizes and I was wondering if they are a direct replacement?

Does anyone happen to know? I'm thinking of sending an email to PJ, but I know he's busy, so I wanted to see if anyone here had done this switch.

I like using it as a Direct send when I don't have an amp and I use it on two different mix consoles. I'm now running it as a pre-amp (because I liked the mix the others had) using the effects patch out of my amp leaving the mix alone and adjusting the volume only. I like the switch between line/inst. so I can also switch it back to my amps and then just mix it to the out front using the DI...our out front board has a 12db buffer.

Check and see if Spector used two SJ pickups instead of an SJ/LJ set, if they're both SJ pickups and the routes are tight then you'll need two Aguilar HC neck pickups to avoid additional routing...otherwise yes, direct replacement ;)

The only way I've found that active EMG's really work with the BDDI at all is with the blend at about 10 o'clock or under, whereas passive pickups are usable throughout the entire blend range...I'm still usually never running the blend at 100%, as that cuts more mids than I'd like ;)
