Go with the Legend. When talking about lower end Spectors and I use lower end as a price description not a quality description. If you compare basses out on the market in the 300-500 price range. New or used, I don't see how the Legend is not a top contender. I've had MIM Fender Jazz, Esp Surveyor, Jackson Concert 5, EPI T-Bird and a Ibanez SoundGear. I say hands down the Legend Classic I have is best of them all. Most tones, most flexibility in sound, build quality and just ease of play. I will say that I've always been a Dave Ellefson fan, that being said, the Jackson Nailed his tone, but again, that his bass and his tone so it sounded like Megadeth. All the others were just ok. I did like the ESP because of the MM pup, but the neck felt weird. T-Bird was dull and lifeless. The Fender was just Mehhh. It is what it is. Ibanez neck also felt weird, but I know it felt too thin, some players like that, and it's what works for them. I've got one legend and I'll be getting another one here shortly. For me, they work out great. While I admit that my ultimate goal is a US build NS-X with a Wimbish Neck Profile, I am perfectly content with the Legend and ReBop. They are built like tanks and sound awesome.

+1! Legends are great basses! One day I'd like to have a Legend 5 fretless. :bassist:

The 4x10 is in the garage. That's a 1518 on the bottom it has a new 500 watt TE Celestion in it. The swr Goliath sr is for sale though.

I generally run both of mine dimed as I prefer a two volume setup but lately I'm noticing I'm getting some distortion through my cab if run this way (MESA PH610) so I've been backing off quite a bit. I also know I have a shoddy jack in my Euro 5LX right now and am awaiting a replacement from Todd. I put off ordering a replacement because I wanted to find one locally but never did.

My euro 5 has the OBP-3 and my Rex 5 has the EMG BT. The distortion is much more prominent with the Euro 5 and is barely there with the Rex, but still is. I wanna think that the issue is my preamps but I find it hard to believe it would happen with both of my basses.

Next step is to take the grill off my cab and test all of the speakers, but I really only use this cab at home so a blown speaker seems out of the question.

Usually full volume, except when I want to hear more of one pickup over the other. :bassist:
I've had 3 Spectors with the OBP 2/3 and never had any distortions. They run best at 18V. I modded all of mine to 18V. Aguilar recommends to run them @18V. You get more headroom and a cleaner output signal.

Since it's both of your basses that are distorting, I'm more incline to think its on your bass rig. As mentioned already, are you using the pad mode on your amp for active bass? As you mentioned, could be a bad speaker. :)

I remembered the first time I jammed with it, I had the mute button on and was trying to get some volume, had it at about 4, realized the mute was on, disengaged it, and proceeded to practically blow the windows off the room!! Hahaha:o I did something similar...when I first started gigging, I arrived too close to start time to a gig...I setup my Ampeg B-15T Portaflex Fliptop but I wasn't able to get any sound from it. :eek: I was panicking and sweating bullets! Now here's the embarrassing part...our guitar player walks up to my bass rig, looks around it and points out that I never connected the amp to the cab. DOH!!! :o:scowl: That never happened again. :ninja::D Hahaha

We are doing our first 2014 Benefit in Onaway, MI. this Sunday afternoon, for a couple that's had insurmountable hospital bills and about to lose there home to the bank. Hoping for a great turnout. Multiple bands and we all get a 45 minute play time slot. :bassist:

That's why I'm taking this route. This will cost less than buying a new fretless Legend. If it works out, maybe I'll move up to a fretless Euro. Who knows, maybe I'll just upgrade the pups and pre on this and call it good. We'll just wait and see. :D



That's kind of a problem because we don't play any fretless songs. :hmm: Have to talk to the guys and see what we want to learn, and maybe pick a song or two we do already know and just play the fretless on it anyway.

There are the basses that Stuart built his name and reputation on which are made here in the USA since 1975; and there's everything else.

There's the very nice "modern vintage" models made in the Czech Republic. I call them "modern vintage" because in so many ways the Euro models are more like the Kramer Era and late Brooklyn Era basses than the ones made over the past 20 years in Woodstock.

Then there's the Korean models which are great basses. But they are NOT made by hand. They're produced on an assembly line and they lack the fit and little details that make the USA models the dream basses they are. Not that there's anything wrong with them, but they are something different... from a different mold completely than the basses made the first 20 years of Stuart's career... the ones that Spector's name has been built on.

Then there's the Chinese and Indonesian basses (and guitars). If the basses made by hand in NY define the heart and soul of Spector; these instruments are about as far from that concept as any that carry the Spector name.

Again, don't get me wrong. They are perfectly fine basses and guitars. But they are not the masterfully built, amazingly luxurious hand-made instruments that I think any true fan of the brand will tell you is what the brand is about.

I currently own two Korean-made Spectors. And I don't ever plan on selling either. One is a Kramer-Era NS-2A and the other is a Legend-4 Classic. They have their place.

If I'm traveling and want to take a bass that I don't want to obsess and constantly worry about while I'm on the road, or on a plane, or in a hotel room... that's what the Legend is for.

The plan is a good one. Build affordable models and feed the desire for the high-end ones. Create pricing that allows for short jumps from one series to the next up the chain... and most people buy 1 or 2 of each series before working their way to a USA. The goal is to drive everyone to the "ultimate" purchase. Many companies use this same pipeline sales design.

The fact is that with Spector, you really are getting the ultimate machine when you get that USA... There's nothing quite like them. I own 5 USA Spectors and have two more in the build process... both should be finished in the next month.

I love Stuart and what he does. And I feel his basses are the best for what I like to play. That's it. There's nothing really better out there for me. There's some sexy stuff that's different and interesting... loving the USA Redwood Zon with the graphite composite neck... and I'm even having some fun with the Jackson I have now. But when I want to really feel what I am playing. When I want to pick up a bass that feels like a finely tailored suit... I reach for my NS-4 or one of my NS-2s.

Yep, this! Same here...my first and current fretless is an Ibanez SR375F. But like you said here Patrick, when I want that "One" tone/sound and finely made instrument, I reach for my Coda 5XL DLX Jazz Bass. :):bassist: I seriously doubt my Spector bass(s) will ever be replaced. :ninja:

I did something equally as dumb when I got my first cab that had multiple input jacks. I connected dual 1/4" cables to it & the same head. All I got was buzzing & farting. Spent 20min fiddling with my bass before I even tried unplugging anything from the head. -_-
