I had a local amp tech/builder named bill nance do it. He charged me $50 for the labor. So it was a total 400 dollar investment.

Some of you may have seen my posts asking for opinions on a couple different Spector models. Well, I spent the money I didn't have to spend on a like-new Legend Custom from an eBay seller. $434 incl. shipping, quick delivery, a few hours of noodling, and here are my thoughts:

1 - This bass is CLEAN. The seller wasn't lying when he said "one hour of playing". The factory sticker is still on the back plate. Absolutely immaculate bass, shipped in the factory box (I think - offset box with curved styrofoam neck brace) inside a shipping box with plenty of padding for shipping. Kudos, eBay dude!

2 - Strapped it on. Top horn must be shorter than my Yamaha, because I could feel it pulling the strap across my shoulder more than I'm used to. Shrug. Shrug again. Good enough. Man, that neck is slick. So slick it almost felt cheap for a couple songs. Width is good, radius is good, but just - wow, that is slick.

2a - Bass started cutting out. Opened up the back plate and found some jack wires crossed through the jack contacts. Moved them aside, gently, and no problems so far. D string has some buzzing but I think if I raise the action a hair, we'll be good. Might need a hair of a turn for relief; not too worried about it just yet.

3 - Moving thru the band list on the iPod, figuring out the sound and - musical taste arguments aside- I started playing "Ah, Leah!" by Donnie Iris and WOW. That C# just plastered itself against my left ribs. The Spector hammered that mid-range, 2nd to 4th fret stuff into my guts like I was standing in front of a good PA system. Just thudding into my ribs like that was its job.

4 - Still working to figure out the EQ knobs. I usually practice through headphones but I'll have to drag the rig downstairs and let it stand up and shout this weekend. My MB200 has a -10 pad switch, which actually makes the bass sound a little better through the phones, but I'd like to see what the rig does live.

5 - Brand new Spector (practically), a few beers, some loud rock n roll… Yay, Spector! Yay, me!

I came back with an NS2-A.

I still have yet to plug it in, but I will & I'll get some clips up soon.

This thing is just.....WOW! And it's in absolutely wonderful condition for being more than 20-years-old.

Feels like Home, just like the first time I played a Euro @ Guitar Center in 2002 or so.

Blows my Performer 4DLX away completely, and the Performer 4DLX destroys everything else in its price range!

That's why I gave it to my Dad today: He's been wanting to get back into bass for a long time.

We're both stoked!

Great score... Great condition and love the color.

As a dual NS-2A owner, you will be even more happy once you start playing it.

I think I mentioned before that my 2nd NS-2A actually moved into my #2 spot.

Congrats, welcome to the Spector world.

Regarding 2a

If I remember correctly, the input jack on this model is deeply inserted in the body. So that may have caused your "cutting out" problem.
Finding the right cable will do the trick.

Yeah, Lima, it's a very recessed jack input. I'm using a 90* plug on the bass end and I've found I need to put some extra slack through the back end of the strap. Seems OK now.

Btw, saw your video on the Spector Central site. Great testimonial, and I wish you the best of luck. Y'never know, you could outlast all of us.

I listened to the clip on my iPhone with earphones too, sounded just awesome! So I had to plug in my Ian Hill NS-2 and did some adjusting, put the treble & bass flat, both pups at full. Sounded close to your clip but not quite. But I like the way it sounded. I'd not tried that before. I'm thinking of using that setting for my Sunday gig.

jay440 - I have an NS-2A that's black - I'm just 'upgrading' it with gold tuners, gold bridge and new passive EMG P/J HZs. I'm going to try and make it look like an Ian Hill, lol. Congrats - I love the neck on my NS-2A!

When you had your Hazlab put in, did the EuroLX Pot holes accomodate the thicker pot shafts on the HazLab or did they need to be widened as it says on the Spector website?

I told him about this, but he didn't say anything, I will have to ask him.

I have seen a few posts on swapping in the HAZ in the Euros and everyone has said they had to widen the holes for the pots as the shaft is a tad thicker on the Hazlab preamps.....

Saw this NS-2A on ebay Spector NS-2A NS2A neck-thru active bass - eBay (item 220824513956 end time Aug-10-11 21:34:36 PDT)

I think this is one of the later Samick models. jarrodcunningham mentioned that the first round of NS-2A basses were actually produced in Japan. And the way to tell is by the placement of the knobs, and the serial number.

Here's mine:

The knobs form a 'diamond' shape. And the serial number is on the control cavity cover

The one on eBay, look at the knobs, notice how they are parallel with the strings:

No serial number on the control cavity cover

Serial number and 'made in Korea' on the back of the headstock:

Mine doesn't have that.

Also, my cable socket actually sticks out - and eBay one - it's flush with the body - or slightly recessed.

Can anyone else confirm?

Yes, the Sunburst one is definitely a Samick...I have a blue one just like it. Along with the knob placement being a different pattern, and the serial number placement, The bridges on the Samicks are a bit different, and you will notice the upper horns are not as rounded (see Jay440's red NS2A above...horns are much more rounded).
I kinda dig that Sunburst one though...might have to watch it.
Incidentally, if anyone runs into a Kramer NS-2C please gimme a shout.

I offically have HazLab GAS now... Do you mind if I ask how much it cost to install it?

Widening the holed must not have been a big deal, my guitar guy said the install was really easy and charged me $20.00.

Sounds great through my headphones, need to get home so I can play it through an amp.

I even ran my fingernail gently over the sheilding foil on the other side of the cover to see if it was under there.

I recall reading that the very first runs didn't have them, just like the first CRFMs/Euros didn't have 'em either.

That is correct.
From the Spector Website
Earlier models of these Kramer import guitars and basses did not have a serial number. Later models had a four digit serial number located on the back plastic electronics cover. Each serial number started with "NS".
