What am I missing? There ARE SPECTOR neck-thru models with lots of pup configurations for lots of different tonal options.

The NS-1 (not on the price list as an active model but Stuart has been known to make one on special order from time-to-time, has a single P pup.

The NS-2 can have the P/J or J/J pup config.

The NS-4 comes with DC humbuckers but you can install CS or TW if you want (with the TW you have to use a different circuit).

The NS-4 models have sometimes been modified on special order with things like a single MM humbucker or an MM with a J. or two MMs or a humbucker and a J.

The NS-4P has a Piezo bridge and that really offers a ton of additional tonal range.

You can get about any configuration you want... a SPECTOR for every occasion. That's what I'm working on in my collection. I have the fretless (P/J) the NS-2 P/J the 35" scale BEAD Euro with humbuckers (TW) and the NS-4 with DC humbuckers. I'm building a J/J NS-2 next and then a fretless NS-4 with the Piezo bridge option...

A sound for every occasion. :-)

Sam I've seen your list of Spectors get smaller and smaller since I've joined the family and its bitter sweet. I guess my only regret is that I haven't been able to purchase one of your fine instruments.....

I'm getting different tones from my NS-2As and I'm loving it. The blue one with the alembic pups is a lot hotter and crisper. My Red one has more of a smooth sound and some growl when I turn up the treble a bit....... When the pots get in a TonePump goes in the Red one.. I'm wicked wxcited to hear the difference.

I tried hooking up a standard jack on my new purchase and was unsuccessful, so its back to the front spot for now. the Alembics use a different jack with more than 3 points to solder onto...

It does make me sad when I end up selling a Spector but at the same time I get to share and give that joy to a new person. I sold 3 to help fund the Forte and honestly Id sell another 3....its that good. :eek: :bassist:

Your family is looking good..... how is the neck comparison on the 2 versions of the NS-2As?

Sell some more of your non-Spector gear and be the new proud owner of the NS-2JAR ;) :hiding:

But if I ever put that up for sale you have get a release from Trace first.
I promised him first dibbs on it way back in June.
And I have a scary feeling he would drive across the US on his bike to kick the blank out of me if I didnt give him first offer. or even worse he may revoke my club number. :eek: :crying:

At one point, Chrisloe took 2nd dibbs but I think he may be set with his NS-4 now. So I can put you down as 2 or 2.5 on the list. ;) :bassist:

Patrick, nice range of tonal diversity! BTW is fretless PJ that you mentioned a Euro or American one (I think it's the black one in the corner shown at one of the pics posted by you earlier)?

I wasn't aware that you could still order an NS-1, and my only complaint with the NS-4MM is that the pickup is significantly closer to the bridge than on an actual MM, in my experience bridge pickups that close just don't sound as full as when its backed up a bit into the sweet spot. :hmm:
I like to get a lot of my tone from pickup and location rather than EQing a lot to finally get it where I want

I'm looking for some string for my new to me NS-5XL. The bass will be strung low E to high C.

I currently have a set of non tapered Ken Smith SS. While the highs and lows seem fine, the lower mids are pronounced and kind of muddy.

Hi was thinking of trying a set of DR Hi Beams but was wondering, with Spector basses, is there a "recommended" set of strings to get a hi fi tone?

Most around here like DR's hi beams , low riders. The Sadowsky's Lima uses sound great too . There are always Spector strings for your Spector bass as well. My pref is for hi beams, but I like em super bright, and they sell them just about every where. Blue steels are pretty good as well. Yeah Spector and Muddy don't go together lol.

I use Sadowsky Blue SS on my Sadowsky. The problem with this application is they don't have a thin enough string for a high C.

I've heard mixed reviews on the Spector strings while I've heard nothing but rave reviews on the DR strings. I also like my bass super bright so I'm thinking the Hi Beams might be the way to go.

Super bright are definitely hi beam territory. I'm thinking of trying the Marcus Miller fat beams too ( been a DR player myself for over a decade ) . Their hi beams with a little more low end. There was a good DR string comparo link on here a wile back.

Well there ya go then! JPS has said time and time again that you can pretty much custom order what you'd like. :D What a great bunch of guys to do business with!!!

I don't know if I'm suppose to share this but what the hay... I asked PJ if I could have my favorite strings (GHS precision SS FW) installed and setup by the SPECTOR pro on my new Forte 4 before delivered to me? PJ said to send them! Now what other bass company would do that I ask you?!?! Nobody that I know of!!
