Spector Club (Part 2)

I'm having a little problem with my Euro LX5, the B string sounds very dead and doesn't sustain nearly as much as the other strings. I've still got the factory strings on, and the bass was in the shop for quite some time before I got it, could that be the problem?

I have finally been bestowed with a number. I posted pics somewhere in the first part so ill do it again, im #106, yay!

Thats also my archer acoustic bass and my lizard cage in the background of that last one,if you look really closely, you can see my lizard in the corner, lol.

It could very easily just be a dead string. Who knows what the bass might have been exposed to if you had it in the shop. Some greasy fingered music store boys playing it...or the string could have been put back on and twisted. Try taking it off and putting it back on, making sure it isn't twisted.

I was playing a Peavey Grind 6 (yea, different class bass, but it served it's purpose) and I also had Alembic Epic 4 and 5 string instruments (sold them a while a go). The Euro plays far easier then the Peavey and the Alembic 5 string. I was a bit concerned that the neck on the Euro would be chunky. Turned out not to be the case. Really smooth action. I was also a bit concerned about the Tone Pump circuitry as I had never used a bass with boost only bass and treble controls. However, the bass sounds really good and tone control are just right for it.

Last Monday my group was supposed to get together to pratice (which is rare anymore) and I was hoping to show off the bass...but the guitarist called practice due to illness... So, it get's its first showing at our gig on Friday.... Ah well....

man ! change them strings , or boil em in salt water .... ive never had any problem with any b sting on a spector . it may just be a dead string ....

First off, hope your Dad's doin' okay...

Were these gig pictures taken in New Jersey, by any chance?

Looks a LOT like a place near me (in Allenhurst). Just curious. :)

Actually - yes - it's club just south of Clinton on Rt. 31 called Tiff's. Used to be Clancy's, and years ago it was called The Hunters Rest. We've played there off and on for a number of years.

Thanks for the thoughts Buskman - he seems to be doing ok so far.

The gear look like a lot...and in fact there is but some of it is the PA gear. The rig I used that night is:

Ampeg SVP-Pro preamp (older black-face version)
Mackie M1400i power amp
2 x Hartke Hydrive 4x10 cabinets.
V-bass (only used as a straight processor as I have not mounted the hex pickup to the Spector - yet.)

To my left side in the rack on the top I have a Behringer Bass V-amp Pro that is there in case the Ampeg blows out on me. It was pretty inexpensive - but I had to go thru several before I got one that worked...

In the same rack I have a crown XLS-402D and a dual 15 band EQ that is used for my vocal monitors. The Crown is also there in the event the Mackie dies on me...I could share monitors with the lead vocalist if needed to - though it's not very pleasent! :D

The rack under that houses the main PA amps. We're running some older Peavey CS800's for monitors and PA tops - the subs amp is a Mackie m-2600.

The problem with this club is they have a very small area to set up in - and both guitarist insist on using Marshall half-stacks...and both want to be right next to the drummer. Unfortuanately that meant I had to have my rig right behind me - about 2 foot. I ran the M1400 in dual mono-mode so I could dial the volume down on the top cabinet - I really didn't want to get an anurisim...

Regarding strings - right now I have the stock Spectors that came on the bass - .30 to .130 I believe..I really like them so I ordered another set. I was using DR Marcus Miller light guage on my Peavey Grind - they sounded good...however, more metal gives you a more solid tone. Does anyone know who actually makes Spector's strings?

Will the Schaller strap locks work on all the Spectors?

I have a NS2A and a Euro, and it looks like they will, but didn't know for sure or not. I don't want to install new buttons, just put the locks on my strap and go.

Any help is appreciated!

After nine years of using various other basses, I've come back to where I started, at least in terms of the brand name (my first bass, which I sold in '99, was a Kramer-era Spector NS - the cheaper model with the dot inlays). I picked up a Euro 4LX from a fellow TBer, and after a couple of days of playing it and doing a bit of recording with it, it definitely clicked. I like it so much, I just snagged a second Euro from the classifieds so I can string it B-E-A-D for those times when I want extended low range (I'm not really a 5-string guy and I like the P/J EMG configuration).

These Euros really are nicely made, great playing basses. That tight, focused EMG crunch sure does occupy a cool space in a mix. I think I might actually stand a chance of staying put for a while this time and getting off the bass-swapping merry-go-round. Here's hoping!
