Spector Club Part 6

New to the spector owners club but here is Maya, my Euro LX4 with the poplar burl top. LOVE IT!

One more question: do they make any 5-string models with the P/J setup? I can switch to a 2-band preamp, but I'd need counseling if I had to switch to a four-banger. It sounds to me based on those Andy Irvine vids (thanks to the poster of that link, they were a huge help) like the P/J sound would fit better with my main gig, which is a small church ensemble, even though all I do in my spare time is slap. WHY IS IT SO HARD TO CHOOSE?

I've never seen a 5 string Spector with P-J pickups (doesn't mean they don't exist but I'm guessing if they do they're rare and probably $$ compared to one of the standard 5's with humbuckers.) One thing you could do is get a 5'er that has the EMG 40DC's in it and swap those out for a 40P and a 40J. They're essentially the EMG P and J pickups but in a humbucker housing. The EMG's have quick disconnect fasteners so the swap is an easy, solder-free job.

Someone on this board posted a pic of his collection at one one time and he had at least a couple of them. I was thinking his were reversed P like Spector does it usually, but I could be remembering it wrong.

I always wondered, with both bobbins being the same size (unlike most other P5's), which one is picking up the A string. It should be the top one to be vintage correct, but I don't know on these.

Have a question regarding my Euro 5LX. I have Dunlop Dual Design strap locks on all of my other basses, so I figured I'd change out the strap locks on the Spector so I could use the same strap.

At a glance the screws that came with the Dual Designs looked to be the same length and diameter, but the threads on the Spector's original screws seemed deeper with a thinner shaft.

I was just going to use those screws on the Dual Designs, but the heads were a little too big to fit through the holes on the Dual Designs.

The screws wound up feeling fairly tight going in but I did get them in all the way. So was this a bad thing to do? After I did it, I started thinking, could this cause any kind of cracking? Both were wood screws so I was thinking if anything it just made the holes bigger now. So in that sense if I put the old screws back perhaps they'd be loose.

The kicker is, I put on my current strap and the Spector hung way lower than my EBMM's and Carvin's due to the locations of the strap locks on the Spector. So ultimately I would have been better off with a different strap. Do'h!

So just looking for some reassurance I didn't just f up my bass. I'm not going to wear the bass on a strap until I get some feedback as I'm not sure if the weight pulling on the screws would be a bad thing now. Hopefully I'm just spazzing since this is the most expensive bass I own. :)

That's because of the offset strap button location on the bottom of the Spector.
I've never understood why they place it there (part of the Spector stigma as a lowriding Rocker's bass I guess).

I've moved it to dead center on every Spector I've ever owned. It balances and rides so much better when centered. It really accentuates how nicely the curved body can fit on you. Having it offset like that kind of works against the whole ergonomic body design principle.

A couple of Spector owner/bassists I know have also done this and agree that it feels better this way.

Messing around in my basement the last couple of days and, to my delight, discovered that I can get my NS5-H2 to sound like a meatier version of my modded Thumb NT. Delicious sound. I took it to practice last night set up with that sound and my drummer's friend (who is a guitarist) commented that my bass "sounds friggin' huge". Sweet.

Has Spector ever made an unfinished neck?

Nope, Euro5LX
A few things give it away...
Mainly the bridge and the knobs.
NS-5XL models have 3 knobs... they are powered by the USA 18v Tone Circuit. You could put the USA 9v (4 knobs), but why?
And the bridge... you can get black bridges on USA models, but the rounded corners and size of the bridge suggest Euro.
USA bridges are larger, wider and have flat squared surfaces.
Lastly, the crown inlays are not always a giveaway, you can request to have MOP put in a NS-5XL, but the standard crown inlay on all USA Neck-Throughs (minus the Forte Line) is Abalone.
Alex often orders custom Euro models.
