Squier Affinity Jaguar Bass...H?!

I scored a set of hipshot ultra lite tuners for really cheap, so the next change is tuners to address the minor neck dive this guitar has. I’ll report back on actual weight differences, fit and feel, etc. I kind of have a goal here to make this guitar the best it can be for not a lot of money and with all cheap off the shelf parts. Nothing fancy.

Absolutely, nothing some ultralight tuners and a high mass bridge can’t fix. The neck dive on mine is almost negligible and I use a slick Levy’s strap.
In fact I think the neck dive on my Spector NS Pulse 5 is worse.

Which model strings? I love the balanced rounds. Long Scale BT?

Even though I ordered this 8 days ago from a shop 36 miles away, USPS took their sweet time getting the bass to me. It was in USPS’ hands for 7 whole days. If I had a car I could have just made a quick trip out to get it.

It’s absolutely beautiful. I took it out the box, stripped off the original bridge and strings, and installed a Hipshot Kickass bridge and D’addario XL balanced 95-40 strings. I actually love the way this thing sounds and plays.

I did give the bass a good inspection when I took it out of the box, and unfortunately it looks like USPS gave the box a nice smack and then taped it over.

It’s on the forearm contour edge, not bothersome, just hoping I can get a little discount for the hassle.

About to get mine and prepping the mods... need to pick: pup (will watch for what @LowEndLobster does), highmass bridge (not sure if going Fender High Mass or Hipshot Badass), pickguard (going to use adhesive paper), and maybe tuners. Excited.. mine arrives this week!

Here's my review of the Jaguar H! Mods coming soon :)

Watching your videos is always a highlight of my day. You did it justice on your review, I really think a lot of their budget was spent on the neck and frets and I am absolutely glad for that. The neck dive on mine is almost negligible; and my place is essentially hum free so there’s that.

I’m not going ham with my mod plans, mainly focusing on the electronics for now. I remember somebody here saying full size pots aren’t going to fit, so just to be safe I am having Wainwright Customs wire me a harness with the CTS mini pots.
I’m looking forward to how everybody else’s turns out!

Noticing a few places in the UK are listing these at less than £200, which makes one extremely tempting. Would love to try one before buying, but at that price point, it's not a massive concern.

My next thinking point is whether to go with the classic black & maple, or LPB? With the blue, I think a white pickup & knobs would look great; unfortunately, doesn't seem so easy to get a white MM pup or cover in the UK.

How do people find a 32" scale? I know it's subjective, but does it feel closer to a 30" short scale when it comes to fret spacing & ease of playing, or more comparable to a 34"?

The stock tuners weigh 3.1 ounces each, putting them at 12.4 ounces total—about 3/4 of a pound.

The hipshot ultralites weigh 1.9 ounces each, putting them at 7.6 ounces—just shy of half a pound. I highly doubt this will have a huge effect on neck dive, but I’m installing them regardless.

Half a pound can make a HUGE difference when it's coming off the headstock. I think you'll notice a nice improvement :)

I’m in the process of ordering a custom harness, and I did some measurements of the control cavity. It looks like the width is 25mm (0.984”) and the depth is roughly 36mm (1.417”). I know full-size pots are about 24mm in diameter so I’m getting the CTS minis and adding a toggle switch for series/single/parallel. Looks like a new control plate is the way to go since I can’t drill to save my life.

I know this touches on subjective, but what pot and cap values should I go for? I’m planning to get a Nordstrand or a Seymour Duncan MM humbucker. (I was wanting the BigMan but it might require a deeper pickup cavity of about 0.25” or 6.35mm more)

This might be a shock, so I suggest sitting down for this bit of info, but it feels like it's exactly right in between 34" and 30" scale length.

Let me clarify, seeing as I phrased that very badly! Just jotted it during a dull work meeting.

With some short scale basses (like the Stingray), the bass itself feels small - the reach to the first fret is very minor; however on some of the same scale length, like the Fallout, there's complaints it doesn't feel like playing a shortie - the bridge being quite far forward pushes the nut further away, so a bigger reach to the first fret, and makes the bass hang differently.

Looking at the Jaguar, the bridge is quite far back but not butted right to the bottom of the body. On the other hand, it's quite a large body in comparison to a Ray or a Mustang, so perhaps that counters the bridge location. So as a purely subjective question, does it feel like & hang like a small short scale, or does it 'feel' more like a long scale bass with reach etc despite being 32"?

I'm looking forward to my local shop starting to get these new models in, so I can spend 30 seconds finding out for myself, instead of asking silly questions like this :smug:

To me it feels more like a full scale instrument than a short scale in that regard.

My 30” scale Bronco bass feels smaller.

My 30” scale custom Bass VI feels larger because of how the bridge is set more towards the middle of the body.

I don’t have a 34” 4 string to compare against, but it feels slightly smaller than my Dingwall Super P5.
