I replaced the pots and wiring (920D Custom shop), pickups (Lindy Fralin), bridge (Omega) tuners (Hip Shot H7) on my 2019 CV 60's sunburst Precision. I thought the stock pups were somewhat boomy and lacked definition. Mods made a huge difference in the sound of the bass taking to a new level but money spent could have payed for a Fender MIM player right from the start. One of the stock tuners was bad and wouldn't even make a full revolution without binding to a complete halt and metal shavings was grinding off. I didn't want any issues developing with the others so just replaced them all. Sanded down and polished some rather sharp underside edge of the frets and a gave the bass an overall great set up. Lastly I gave the Indian Laurel fretboard a few coats of walnut stain to make it more rosewoodesque. I was getting a deadness in the A# area of the G string. Doing some research here on TB I nailed it down to frequently absorbtion in the head stock apparently quite common. I now have 3 Fender Fatfingers (yes 3) placed in different areas on my head stock. Made a tremendous difference and looks cool too. This Squier P bass with all the mods in now killer!!!
I bet it is now but like you said you could’ve nearly bought an MIM by now.
I’m in a bit of a bind for getting a P bass around here. I’m a lefty and while I would love to get a white Player P no one will bring one in. They all want me to buy it first but after some of the experiences I’ve had doing that I don’t really want to do that again. It’s just a MIM P, not some piece of boutique exotica ffs.
Anyways, there is a Squier CV60 P here like yours. Like you, I quickly determined that the pup and especially the tuners are dosh (also had one tuner spitting shavings when I was renting it, never ever had that happen before) and the bridge is basically ok but it isn’t sitting level and the front corners are slightly pitched up.
It actually feels and plays nice though. The finish and 4-ply pg are nice too. The laurel board is fine by me as it’ll be fine with a little fret doctor or similar. It’s a bit of a bitch to get in tune but once there it stays in tune.
So yeah, the Squier is (Canadian dollars) $459 and then I’ll have to figure in the price of a pup, tuners, and bridge. My local ma and pa said they’d sell me a Player P for $800 so idk maybe I’ll order blind again cause a Player P anywhere else around here is $879-899 and after the upgrades the Squier will be around $700-800 total.
One question to all. The CV60’s tuner holes are smaller than the ones on my VM Jazz so I’m left to presume that that tuner shafts are smaller as well. Is this going to be a problem when I want to switch to flats right away?
