Heads up, y'all! Guitar Center has a first generation Classic Vibe '60s Jazz with a black pickguard mislabeled as a Vintage Modified Jazz for a scant $270!

Well, I really didn’t need another one but I purchased the above bass. Thanks @Malak the Mad for the link.
It is indeed a 2008 CV 60s Jazz and I had been looking for one for a while. For 270.00 I took a chance.
It was my first used bass purchase from GC and knew that I could always return at my local GC.
The bass was supposed to ship Friday from GC Syracuse and on Saturday an employee emailed and said they didn’t have the packing supplies until Monday or Tuesday and they would overnight the bass as well as deduct the shipping fee of 25.00 bucks. Cool!
Anyway the bass arrived yesterday and it was pretty dirty but not abused. I put on my rubber gloves and got to work.
First step—tune dirty strings and check trussrod nut and neck relief. The TR nut is in great shape and the neck responded well to adding a touch of relief.
Electronics/pups worked well. No buzzing or static. Sounded great actually. The solder joints were clean and original.
The bass has a few scratches on the body but not bad at all. The neck is in great shape. No nicks or bumps. Tuners are solid. Fretboard and frets dirty but just needed a good scrubbing along with conditioning the fretboard. I’ll polish the frets tomorrow. Bridge is tarnished as well as control plate but cleaned up pretty good.
I installed a used set of DR Sunbeams for now.
The bass set up nicely all around.
The open A string was rattling. The nut slot is cut or worn too low so I put a piece of paper in there, but will work to raise the slot height soon.
Anyway, I guess the bass was on the market for a while— probably because it was a dirty one and in need of a set up.
It’s a great playing bass, cleaned up nicely and definitely a keeper. I’ll be taking it to band practice on Friday evening. For about 290.00, not too bad of a deal.

Congrats. That's a great deal on a 2008 CV Jazz. I sold one just like several years ago for over $100 more than that. They're very solid players.

Congratulations! I saw the link for that one, I no longer buy basses from GC but I am stoked that it went to a good home. Enjoy that CIC J bass they are killer!

Good basses. I had a 2008 I sold a few years ago and eventually regretted it 'til I replaced it with the one I bought during that Fender 50% off blow out on Labor Day weekend. The new version doesn't appear to be all that much different than the CIC version as far as the bones go. The bridge and pickups are upgraded again just as they were on the 2008 so other than the difference in finish they both seem quite similar to me. I wouldn't shy away from the new ones either.

Oh I hear that! Mine are staying off the market for sure. I also grabbed an Indo late 60’s Labor Day special, solid bass!

I do own CIC’s and a few Indo CV’s (all solid basses) just not the Olympic White CIC J (yet) I do have a stellar black one.

Thanks yea I thought so, when I purchased the black CIC Jazz (in the above post) I had never seen another one in the wild in the USA, I felt kinda stoked about it, store owner said mine was from the Japanese market sent to him by mistake and very rare in the US.

I can't speak for the Asian market, but to the best of my memory, I only ever saw the black first-gen CV Jazzes for sale on European websites. Either way, nice CV Unicorn you scored there!

Haha you had the same thoughts on a pickguard too I see. As soon as I'd ordered mine I also ordered a vintage pearl pickguard from The Stratosphere. Plain white didn't cut it.

My feeling is that all of Leo Fender's 50s designs have been around so long producing the bones inexpensively isn't difficult for anyone to do anywhere in the world. How much different can a Poplar body produced in China or Indonesia vary from an Alder body produced in Mexico or even California? Weight might be the only factor and yet mine weighs 9lbs pretty much like my PBass which is Basswood and an Ash body G&L M2000 Tribute. So no big deal to me.

They can shave costs on hardware and pickups but those are all things that can be upgraded to personal preferences and in doing so you can virtually bring one up to the level of any other JBass or PBass costing hundreds of dollars more retail for a fraction of the cost. Mine didn't even have any finish flaws or major QC gripes other than the poorly finished fret ends but then more than half the instruments I've ever bought need work done there because our humidity is so low that alone causes the fret sprout. So I do the work myself better than the mfg could.

Another rare bird finish wise huh? Mine is black which along with white were all that were offered in the US. First I've ever seen of a sunburst finish on that model. They are IMHO one of the best PBasses Fender has ever offered. Maybe even too good for what the initially sold for which may be why they suddenly disappeared. Glad I got mine before that happened.

Like my Jazz Bass mine has a Bill Lawrence/Wilde pickup and a Babicz FCH Bridge and updated electronics and set of thumpy ol' La Bella Deep Talk'n Flats for r&b and southern soul.

Yep the MF’s are killer and made in the same factory as the CIC’s it is essentially a Crafted In China CV with a maple neck and Tonerider pickups…

Pretty sure they never offered a burst MF, I bet Yahboy’s is a “parts” Freeman bass, CV body with MF neck, well done!

You are right, FMIC never make Burst MF P. She is MF Sig P neck with Fender 70s 2 pcs alder body , Fender MIM P bass pickguard and Gotoh 203B bridge.

Yea you did a nice job on that! I like the Gotoh’s I added a smoked chrome 203B to my 70’s Walnut CV P along with P bass special neck with a rosewood fretboard…

You got nice looking walnut CV70P body.
Gotoh 203B has solid build and weight between vintage bend bridge and CIC CV bass himass bridge. Heavy but low profile than most bulky himass bridge.

I make over my part MF P again. From distance, she just look pretty like Squier Late 50s P.

I installed a fresh pack of EB Slinky Cobalt rounds and left the A uncut allowing the winds to get as close to the headstock as possible. The open A buzz is gone and the bass plays and sounds great.

Polished the frets with the Music Nomad Frine polishing kit. So easy and the frets came out wonderful.
I installed a fresh pack of EB Slinky Cobalt rounds and left the A uncut allowing the winds to get as close to the headstock as possible. The open A buzz is gone and the bass plays and sounds great.
Band mates thought it was new.

I love the snarl of Cobalt rounds! They make the fillings in my teeth hurt so good! And if I may be a little smug, you are so very welcome.
