Mike -- thanks for kind words but you ought to see the pics from people who REALLY know what they're doing -- I am a super rank amateur!

AFAIK, they don't make a fretless version of this bass. The closest they come is the 4-string "Vintage Modified"

I'm thinking of another one, and doing the six string mod to it.

Does anyone know of any pickups that are direct replacements for the stock ones? I want to install some new pickups but I don't want to have to do any routing or anything. I was looking at putting some barts in maybe.

Just remember that both pickups on Squier are the same size! You better measure them and check the dimensions from Bart. You may need two bridge or two neck pickups ;)

I was thinking of a VM fretless, but this fiver may fit my situation better. Tried fivers before but they never stuck. I'm sorely tempted as these look like nice deals, and maybe I'll like the wide spacing (My others were tight spaced).

I'm thinking a white one. :)

My neighbor bought one of these Squier by Fender Deluxe Jazz Bass Active V 5-String Basses for his son for $299 from Musician's Friend. He called me over and I did a quick setup, adjusted the neck and lowered the action. I was really impressed by the way this bass played and sounded. In my opinion this bass out performs the more expensive MM jazz bass. And for $299, it is the perfect bass to carry into one of those dives where a fight could breakout at anytime. It is solid enough to become a good weapon, lol.

Ah, so you went with black binding. I'm doing the same but with white. Did you use the .020? Did you use any type of glue?

I've done fret lines several times, but this will be my first time with binding material. I've done mostly thin maple strips or straight epoxy. I'm planning on using black super glue in the slots to hold the binding in.

My bass will be here tomorrow. I didn't know this thread existed, I saw FL Knifemakers bass in another thread and that inspired me to look into it. I'll let you know what I think.

Yes, used .020 and superglue. The binding material works pretty well.

Thanks. The bass arrived yesterday. I was impressed with the structural build quality, which in my case is all that mattered since I'm revamping the bass anyway, but attention to detail is obviously lacking in the assembly department.

I took it out of the box and turned it over to examine it and one of the knobs fell off. No big deal obviously, but things like that tell me that the person who assembled and did final inspection didn't give a sh*t.

Also, I figured I'd plug it in and give it a whirl (just to make sure it actually worked) before I started disassembling, and of course, the jack didn't work. I had to take it apart and clean up some sloppy soldering. No big deal for me, but for someone who may not know how to solder or may not have the necessary tools, it's a problem, and a problem that someone taking a brand spanking new bass out of it's box for the first time shouldn't have to deal with.

When I took the strings off, the nut fell right off. Again, no big deal for me since I have to carve a new one anyway, but ***?

I wasn't crazy about the super polished surface of the ebanol fingerboard. It is very well done (and the fretwork was top notch, by the way) but just not for me. Maybe you Jaco heads will love it because it looked like it was epoxy coated. When I final polish it after the defret, it most certainly won't be anywhere near the gloss that it came with.

Anyway, enough negative, as far as $300 basses go, this is a steal, especailly if you can do minor repairs and adjustments yourself and/or if you plan on using it as an upgrade platform. It's an extremely stable canvas ;)

My defret is complete already and the fret lines are in place. Final trimming, radiusing and sanding/polishing will hopefully happen this weekend. Since I'm changing the bridge and nut anyway, I'm considering going with a flatter radius, maybe 14 inches. I like a wide flat fretless board. The black hardware is sitting around waiting to be installed.

While I have it apart, I may just go ahead and rout it for a pair of soapbars that I'm not currently using. From what I understand, Q-Tuners is changing the footprint of their bass pickups to make them more drop-in friendly, in which case they'd fit right in the holes I'll have for the soapbars. Eventually I'd like to set this bass up passive with a pair of Q-Tuners.

That is all for now ;) I'll post some pics when it's done, or at least this phase...

I just got back from GC & I tested one in black after fiddling with the switch and pre amp controls I was suprised with the bass. The Neck feels great
I have been looking for a 19mm five & if I had the funds I would have left with it today.

Well Now I found my next bass, man that 212 avatar cab I have been saving for is gonna have to wait a little more.
