Squier Deluxe Jazz Active V -- Unbelieveable Bass!

I have been a member on here for quite a while but never needed to really post or ask questions as I can usually find my answers in previous posts. I have one of these superb basses and was wondering if any of you guys who have done modifications could answer a question for me?

I am changing the over to passive but when I looked at the pickup wires I noticed there were three and I was expecting two. I have Red, White and Bare wire. Can anyone tell me what I need to wire the bare wire to if I was going to change to standard passive Jazz wiring? Does it just get attached to the red or white or does it need to be soldered to a pot?

Sorry I am really no expert on wiring, thanks in advance.

The bare wire is a shield wire. It can go to a pot.

I just wanna share how my Squier Deluxe Jazz Active V looks like

I plan to replace the pup to an ultrajazz and the preamp to an obp3 -- not sure if that's a good idea

It took me three days of reading on and off to complete that thread. I feel like i know more about these bases then i ever expected. I bought mine from a friend because i was in a pinch and needed a spare, fell in love with it and now its my main player. Just ordered OBP-3. Deciding on pups.

I'd go for the Squire. This thread is proof enough. You know what you are going to get, a more than playable in any situation 34" scale 5 string bass that has more valid mod possibilities than anything other than an actual Fender.

I think I'm going to.

Mod it with a Bass Mods pre most likely, 3 band with active/passive switch.

Without searching through a 3 year long thread, can anyone comment on how the stock pickups sound passive?

Had one of these for a while, sold it recently. The pickups always sounded fine to me in passive mode...not dead dogs, but not amazing either. Good output, decent frequency range, and quiet. Essentially flat response. Think passive EMG Selects or similar.

Is that paint or pickguard???

I just got a body for $26 on ebay, but there's a big paint scratch next to the knobs and i need to cover it. i was thinking to install a jazz plate, but i liked what you did.

I was expecting to swap out the pups, but after putting in the obp3 I found I was actually satisfied with the stock pups. I might still go with the area jazz pups eventually. I want to keep that midrange growl.

I put in my order for one I found used online, should be here in a few days. Picked up a 5 string Dean with more "bells and whistles" but even a "higher end" Dean lacked the solid feel and sonic punch of these Squiers. So I returned it to get money for the Squier :) I may replace the pickups after I get some funds together but I'm gonna go all stock for a while, no use fixing something that ain't broken right?

Bass came in today, lots of light service scratches but I think I'm gonna try and buff them out. Whoever owned it before changed the mid freq switch to a kill switch (-sigh- but of course not noted on the GC website). They did badly, it makes a loud pop when engaged and makes the bass click while playing. Good thing I'm planning on replacing the pre anyway.

Other than that the bass sounds great. Stock pre is alright, pickups sound good flat. I didn't realize how HEAVY these things are! Its not big deal since I'm a strapping young man (HA!) but it just surprised me.
