Nope, totally sealed package, rather old though. It had a lot of dust on it so who knows how long it had been lying around.
Just tried again my Jaguar SS with my newly acquired setup ( Ampeg PN115 HLF/Ampeg PN 210HLF and GK Fusion head ). The Bass sounds terrific as it is !!! If one only wants to make an upgrade, then I would only suggest replacing the Jazz pickup, which is kinda weak and 'hisses' a little too much to my liking. Other than that, the bass simply rocks !!
Well Mine is officially parted out except i still have its pickups.
I miss it and am getting another one in black, half way through parting it out i had a oh **** why did i do this moment , but i actually made my money back and then some and still have the pickups so its not a big deal to me.

Installed a set of GFS pickups tonight. Initial impressions are that they are a better balanced set. The P pickup isn't as hot or as bright. The J is quieter but still thin sounding. Sound is clearer and more articulate overall. Very smooth. Will know more once I have had a chance to play at full volume with the band and see how it sits in the mix.
Only complaint is that the mounting ears on the GFS P pickup cover are larger than OEM and will have to modify the pickguard to fit. A few seconds with the dremel should take care of that.
Like others here I now have as much invested into a bridge and pickups as the bass originally cost, LOL.

you could just use the original covers assuming the new ones aren't glued on

right! i forgot. they are glued on but there's not that much glue. i used a razor blade around the edges and it came off no problem.
Alright, I figured this might be the place to go. I've been play my Squier P/J a lot lately but to my dismay as I'm playing my hand cramps up a lot and I get a tingling in my wrist/heel of my palm. Seeing as carpal tunnel runs rampant in both my career [cooking] and family [both dad and grandfather have it] I was thinking about looking towards a short scale. It sucks to start being limited already at 22 years old but hey what can you do?
I guess my main question is, do these sound a whole lot different than a standard scale bass? Is there resonance due to the shorter strings? Is it going to be just a punchy and have that same classic sound just in a smaller body? I really like the P/J config and I'd like to stick with it if possible.
I'd really appreciate any help you guys could give me since the guitar shops around here don't carry these, thanks a lot.

I feel your pain, albeit I'm 54, and have that cramp/tingling due to working on a computer all day. I just picked up the bass after 30 year hiatus. Used to play full size P-bass, and switching to a short scale has been a been great. Believe I can play better now than then, and as far as sound, I cant tell the difference. Keep in mind the J pickup is weak and noisy on mine, and seems to be the norm according to others, so plan on at least replacing the bridge P/U. I doubt you'll regret going SS, especially with this bass.
That Jaguar SS has been such a surprise to everyone, including me !!! The J pickup has to be replaced if one wants to gig with it in my opinion and simply get a better tone. This is in my humble opinion. For the price and the beauty of the bass (especially in red!!!), this is truly a gem !!!

I think it sounds better than the Squier VM Jazz I had, and I definately enjoy the playability much better.
These are so much fun, i'm surfing the forums and playing mine right now. i think i'm getting spoiled with the size and weight though. i have small hands and i also wanted something i could practice with anywhere and not have to worry about messing it up. The quality for the price is great. I wish i could shrink my redwood stingray to this size and weight
Update: I wanted to say for the people who come into the club what I did for my Jaguar. The experienced players / setup guys can skip this, but for us rookies it is good.
First, check your intonation. I had some tuning problems and adjusted the saddles ( as ScreamingJane suggested). Here is an easy link just in case someone does not know how.

One note: He does not say how to do harmonics. Again, I apologize for such basic stuff but someone won't know lol, so this is for him or her. Just lightly touch the string above the 12th fret. Don't press it to the fingerboard. Play the string then quickly take your finger off. That is the harmonic note. Tune your new Jag so that harmonic tone is in tune. Then press the string all the way down to the 12th fret and play the note. See if that note is sharp or flat compared to the harmonic note. Screw the saddle in or out on the back screw to get the fretted note in tune with the harmonic note. In = saddle goes back making the fretted note flatter. Out = opposite
When you move the saddle the harmonic will be out of tune, retune the harmonic, rinse and repeat. Then your new Jaguar will sound in tune all the way up and down the fretboard.
The other thing I did was put on Short Scale strings. I used La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass Flatwounds. I used the .39 .056 .077 .096 ones. This is because some say the nut is too narrow for wide strings. It's pretty expensive compared to the price of the bass but the flats are really neat on this one!
It plays much better in my humble opinion than the price would suggest. I like it a lot for just knocking around and dragging it to a place I dont want to take basses that cost an arm and a leg. 
Then I suggest playing the fire out of it! Lol, its really a fun bass.

absolutely. the only thing i worry about for gigs is having it in a hard case but i found something that works.

Go for it, I doubt that you'll be disappointed. The only issue you may run in to is that any upgrades will quickly run over the initial cost of the bass. But I think that simply shows what a deal these things are.
If you do decide to keep it, post a pic. I'll give you a number.
Autodidact, here is another thread you can get some good information about a Jaguar. It may help you form an opinion about gigging. It seems that those who do either roll off a little of the jazz pickup and blend it with the P cranked up higher than the J. Some are replacing the jazz but personally I blend mine. I have not gigged with it but I would not have a problem if I needed to with it.

Edit: I am going to go ahead and get a Tru Oil refinish kit for the back of the neck. I do not like the unfinished feel much. I plan on sanding it very smooth and applying several very thin coats and making it very smooth. Fun little bass.
