Squier Mikey Way Signature Mustang

I would love to hear what one of these Delano SBC 4HE/35 sound like in the Mikey Way

Yeah, I definitely agree with whoever said this bass is heavy. It's like playing an anchor at times. Despite that, it's a fantastic bass (my MCR fandom aside), extremely comfortable to play and sounds pretty good. It does the P Bass thing well, but with a bit less high-end, even when I had the tone pot removed and the volume moved in its place. It looks better in person than it does in all the pictures Fender has, and the finish is really tough as well. I personally prefer Mikey's tone on their first album with a J, but this sounds good as well.
I don't care about Mikey Way. I don't care about MCR. I don't care about "signature basses"...I care about what a bass sounds and looks like, and does it have the features I need? This one appears to fit the bill!
I just lucked into a Kustom K150-1 amp/215-B cab in SILVER SPARKLE tuck 'n' roll finish. My first thought after I got done cleaning, fixing and playing through the outfit was "Squier makes some kind of silver sparkle finish bass...think I'll go check it out online". So I come to all the TB threads about this bass, and well over half of them have members moaning about whether "Mikey Way deserves a sig bass" or "MCR sucks".
I could care less. And to the person who thought that "a signature adds $100.00 to the cost of the bass", I say....how do you figure? At a street price of $299.00 ($255.00 after one of the numerous 15% "Big Box" store sales), where is there even any ROOM for $100.00 worth of signature?
Does anyone really think they could get a chunky silver metalflake, high-gloss polyurethane finish, high mass bridge, humbucker-pickup, short-scale bass for $199.00 from a major manufacturer, or even "mod" one up for themselves with an SX? I don't think so.
IMHO, this bass hits all the right targets for me. It will look absolutely great with the Kustom amp and cab (silver & black), it adds a new tonal pallete (single humbucker), it will be my first short scale (i have small hands, and this may become my "main" bass), and it doesn't break the bank. I'm glad to be living at a time where high quality, low cost instruments are available in so many configurations that the average player can find good deals based on such criteria.
I'm buying one for sure.

Bummer, went to rehearsal today at my drummer's house and he had found a big chunk of that THICK finish from the back left behind last time I was there. What's left is easily peeled off in chunks. Guess I'm going to finish peeling it and clear coat it with something - about half the "sparkles" are still on it. The "racing stripe" is in the finish so that'll be gone. I did leave the bass in the car with zero degree temps, could be that's what cracked the finish? Not a big tragedy to me, I'm not a fan of either that THICK finish nor that racing stripe anyways. I only bought it for the pickup configuration.
Well...I don't think that leaving it out in the car did the finish any GOOD! If you've ever seen a hot rod or a bass boat with this kind of finish take an impact hit (like a car wreck), it is not uncommon at all for thick, chunky metalflake to peel off this way. It's probably not the most durable, if you are going to either (1) subject it to massive physical abuse, or (2) Expose it to vast extremes of temperatures.
That said, I still haven't bought mine (money problems, dontcha know?), and just the other day I was wondering what one of these would look like in a "natural" finish?
Roadkill, you have an opportunity to find out what the "basewood" looks like under all that finish, and also find out if it looks any good under a high-gloss clear coat. I own a "natural" VM 70s Jazz bass and an "amber" VM Precision bass, and they BOTH look good. Not as nice as an ash body, but still good.
I have researched, and as far as I know, NO ONE is making a "Mustang" body in ash as a body you can use to start a project. So....I will be following this thread in the hopes that you DO finish stripping the finish off yours, so I can decide if I might want to do this in the future when I get mine.

I tried one out at Sam Ash, but I liked the pawn shop Mustang much better... worth the extra money.
Speaking of finish cracks in the chunky silver metalflake of the Mikey Way Mustang, I just happened across this one in the online "Used" listings at Musician's Friend. Since they don't do trade-ins, I can only assume that this was a return due to the crack, most likely happening somewhere in the delivery process.
I asked them to send me a closeup pic of the damage, and they sent me THIS:
I'm probably crazy for buying this, but I can always return it if it has any other issues. AFAIK, it's a brand new, unplayed Mikey Way Mustang with a cosmetic issue, and I talked them down to:
$179.95!
If the crack expands, or other pieces of the finish start falling off, I could then do as I suggested Roadkill try, which is to strip ALL the finish off and do a refi in "natural", or even "Walnut". For this kind of price, I can't see how I can go wrong!
After reading all the posts about this bass I could find, I gather that for flat wound strings, the best match is probably the La Bella 760F-MUS, as it is a medium scale string, and actually designed FOR a Mustang bass. Anyone else have a better suggestion?
I'll post more pics (ESPECIALLY under the control plate and guard) when it arrives next week. Wish me luck.

Holy cow this bass is awesome. After listening to some short scale baselines like LCD sound system, i got the bug for a shorty and this one came out on top. I wanted to stay lower in price as I imagine I'll give this to one of my young sons to learn on and the fit/finish of this was better than the jaguar. At first I thought it had way too much growl with the stock round wound strings and would need constant hand muting technique or some magic foam or jimmy-rigged mutes however I just put on a set of the la bella MUS deep talkin' flat wounds and it is a monster. In my bass stable i've got a couple of stingrays (classic 2 band and a darggie slo special with HH pickups and an ebony fingerboard) as well as marcus miller jazz. I've got TI flats on the dargie stingray but assorted rounds (slinkys, cobalts) on the other two. Its hard to believe but right now i'm digging the tone coming out of this cheap bass more that those three. Maybe its just my flavor of the month/year but i'm loving it for now.

BTW, I could not be more pleased with my experience with BSO and Jason in particular. For those of you who do not know, TalkBass members can get a "VIP Discount" on ANY strings there, and he always has FREE ground shipping, in addition to a "Rewards" program for any string purchases.
I have used Fender 9050 SS Flats on all my other basses, but I had to search out a "Medium" length set for this MW Mustang, and Fender doesn't make 9050s in that size. I am hoping that the Deep Talkin' strings will match the smooth feel and the great tone I have grown used to. Anything beyond that will be gravy.
With any luck, I should also see my new MW Mustang at my doorstep today or tomorrow.....I can't wait!
