Squier Owners Club

Hello, I've had my Squier Affinity P-bass for nearly two years and during the time it's been mostly catching dust, sadly. Anyway, last week I thought it's 'bout the damn time to do something nice for my bass, so I bought Seymour Duncan's SPB-3. Sorry for low quality of photos since I don't have any proper camera available.

I'm really glad I decided to buy 'em as a part of major overhaul. Next thing to improve is the rest of electronics. I'm also planning on changing strings to Fender flats. After that I might go for heavier bridge or just focus on some visual stuff like tortoise pickguard and pickup plate to make the whole bass kinda 'Waters at Pompeii' - visually of course.

That's one sexy Jaguar up there!

I'm thinking about Fenders 9050CL (40-105). They're gonna be my first flatwound strings so I hope I won't be disappointed :P Will see how it'll work out with foam mutes mod I just applied. Right now I'm running on stock, two years old roundwounds and the foam made it way easier for me to play and get the sound I really dig. I'm shocked such small and funny mod could make a difference like that.

I've had this bass for a while but haven't played it much because the pots were bad and I have about 8 other P basses. I finally got around to fixing it.
installed some some new CTS pots, new knobs, tug bar, new pickguard (I had to reshape to fit around the base of the neck, way wider than stock).
the only other thing I might do in the future is put some real tuners on it and possibly replace the pups.
as it is, it's a player, I could easily gig this thing and be happy.
it's basically a jazz bass neck on a PJ body, gotta love these P Bass Specials

Y'know, on any of this modification stuff, it comes down to whatever works FOR YOU. I mean, if you like the sound of aftermarket pickups then by all means available .. install them and be diggin it. There are no "rules of tone" other than ONE .... Rule #1 is do what sounds good for your situation. After that, there are no other rules. I am as guilty as anyone, my Squier VMJ is anything BUT stock (see the "X-Bass" link in my sig). The pickup cavity is as big as a house at this point, and the 2 channel output has spawned any number of other bass-rig changes.

So do whatever flicks yer thrillswitch! You can even .. oh, I don't know .. perhaps ..... join a club!

What's not to like? Love the Jag! I'm a recent advocate of this (your model especially) bass but have always dug the Jag and Jazzmaster guitar.

It was just mentioned a few posts above your post on the same page. I've never understood why "club numbers" are so important anyhow. It's pretty funny sometimes ... I've seen some members' signatures that have all of these club memberships stacked up like some sortof merit badges. I guess I don't understand the club number mentality. I've always been the odd screw in the box anyhow so it really shouldn't be any kind of surprize to anyone that I don't get it. Haahaa!

So far it sounds much improved through my headphones but I'll know the real story through my amp after rehearsal tonight.

You know I completely agree with everything you said here. I had the same bass and was actually considering upgrading to Dimarzio's like you. But I also had neck stability issues on mine. When the opportunity came up buy a G&L Tribute JB-2 for less than $300 I jumped on that. All it needed was a fret leveling and it sounds amazing. I think they might even be made in the same factory. FWIW my VMJ needed a fret leveling as well as do most inexpensive basses. I guess that if all you do is Slap all the time the VMJ is a beast but I also found the stock pickups lacking in warmth for when I wanted to smooth things out. All that said. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Squier but I might lean towards the CV Series if did.

I'm thinking I want to get a tort replacement guard.
Any suggestions?

No suggestions but interested in responses. I've got one of the older P Specials with the mirror pickguard and often think I'd like to get something less flashy.
