I bought this 3 years ago as a backup, I added straplocks, geezer pu's, and some flats and have used it most if not all non-gig jams and I got to say, the neck is very nice, I love this bass. I can only compare it to the only other fender basses I bought new which were a 98 fender "75" ri mij jazz and also a 98 mia pj "California special" p-bass. I no longer have either though I still have the catalog, crimony, hehe

I believe both have same pickups but sound different each others.
The VM 77 sound just meaty, growl and juicy , meanwhile the std VMJ sound just warmer and smoother . The most notify different is bridge pickups, the vmj sound too smooth if compare to snappy and bite voice on VM77.

Just wanna write some praise about this Squier VM70s I purchased about 2 years ago. This bass has a quality of finish that easily rivals with the American Special and Aerodyne I also have. It plays so easy, sounds a little treblier because of the maple neck but has enough bottom-end and growl to scare stranded Halloween kids. It looks good, feels good, sounds good. It is heavier than my other basses, but it has the walk that goes with its talk. With the series/paralell mod, I cover tons of ground in terms of musical style, actually all the ground I need. This bass could easily be anybody's #1 axe and its the bass I play the most often. I haven't really shopped basses lately so I'm not sure what's available in the market in that price range, but if it's not the best value out there, it has to be in the top 3.

From my limited experience with the VMs, I believe that the use of the 'Soft Maple' for body wood was what made the difference.
So the Candy Apple Red and Olympic White should be identical to the natural finish.... for some reason, I thought the natural finish was different. Either way, hell of a bass

Which black bridge do you have on there? Is it a direct drop in replacement?

Hello! Would love to hear people's experiences on using BEAD tuning on these basses. I have a lefty VM jazz I'm thinking of trying it with. Would you recommend upgrading the pickups if I'm going to BEAD or is that not much difference? I feel like I read people complaining about the 5 string of these basses, if that's comparable please share your opinion haha.

I have one of these as well. Idk which one you have, the natural with a maple body and board or the burst with a basswood body and rosewood board. Also, if you have a natural is it an older one (up to early ‘13) with Duncan Designed pups or a newer one with Fender Designed pups? My early ‘13 is natural with the Duncan’s.
I have tuned mine down to B and it still sounded pretty good. The B & C were a little flat sounding but imo that’s more to do with the limitations of my amp and/or cabs than the bass.

Picked up this '09 Squier Vintage Modified 70's Jazz Bass w/case for $225 locally. Was really shooting for this version due to the satin neck. Not sure how the designed by duncan pups compare to the fender designed pups in the later years.

Nice score! The satin finish on the neck makes it one of my favorite necks of all the basses I own.
I think the Duncan Desifgned pickups sounds pretty good. Not sure how they compare to the newer ones though.
Curious to hear from you guys that have installed a Gotoh 201 bridge on your VM?
I've heard ppl say that you cant achieve as low of action with 201 as you can with the stock bridge.
But how much difference are we talking about?
