Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

Yeah, I have no doubt that the string spacing is correct but had wondered about the screw pattern matching up. I was mistaken in thinking there were different ones for the 5 string A-style bridge. Thanks for the input!

Whether it makes a difference is a matter of interpretation. I don't think it'll work miracles, but it will serve the same purpose as a string tree. I use it on an A string, I'd imagine a well wound string would do the job on the B, but the retainer will at least make it consistent.

It won't be useable with the stock tuners, the way it works is it replaces a washer and held in place with a nut wound down. It will absolutely work no issues with Ultralites though, that's what I use mine with.

Fender use them on higher end American basses, like this Elite, so read into that what you will.

@steve_rolfeca @/\/\3phist0 I finally got new guts for the VMPV to match those of my MIM ... I think my VMPV and MIM Fender sound closer to each other now, but the VMPV retains enough mid-i-ness and mushiness that I do still notice a difference, at least with the basses unaccompanied. At this point, I think I've ruled out everything but the difference in body wood; presumably alder's stiffer than basswood, so maybe that accounts for the (slight) difference I still hear (that, or the distinct possiblity that it's all in my head). It will have to do, and in the mix, I expect it will. Fortunately, both sound good, and I do think I hear better balance between the strings on my VMPV than I did before the switch, which certainly matters more.

The Jags look like they’re coming off a different assembly line.

Almost nonexistent matte finish on the back of the neck, and lots of fret sprout on the ones I’ve sampled.

Nice basses, but the quality control doesn’t give me the “Classic Vibe” sense of confidence that I got from the VMPV...

When I bought this bass for $180 Cdn a few years back, it was already converted to a PJ setup with a DiMarzio Ultra Jazz added to the stock pickup. I put in a new pickguard, Hipshot hardware and an Audere Classic preamp.

I’m very happy with how it plays and sounds. The Audere has a reputation of being very transparent, and I find it is. Not every tone is a gem, but there are certainly enough of them. I find it very easy to quickly dial in different sounds to fit the particular song. It’s my only five string, and my 8 other electric bass guitars all have jazz width necks, but because of the thinness of the neck front to back, it doesn’t feel so out of place with the rest of them.

My only other fiver was Mexican Jazz from a decade ago that had a neck that just couldn’t be set up well. So this is my second kick at the can, as it were. I don’t think this bass will convert me it a real five string player (I’m too old to change!), but it is handy to have a fiver in the stable!

I just did a thorough overhaul on a 4-string VM Jaguar PJ for a buddy.

Neck had way too much relief, fingerboard was dry and crusty, fingerboard and frets had sharp edges, nut was garbage- badly cut and nasty-looking. Action and pickup height were all wrong, strings were dead, tuners were junk.

Felt like a real dog.

Too my surprise, the neck accepted a fairly severe relief correction and held it. After some cleaning, polishing, filing, sanding, adjusting, and a fresh set of D'Addario nickel rounds, it turned out to be a surprisingly useful instrument.

Nice, aggressive mid-forward tone. I wasn't real hot on the bass boost preamp, but a touch of it was actually useful to fatten the Bridge pickup when it was solo'd.

I would rate it as a great rock bass, and a nice compliment to his other two basses- a hand-made neck-through ebony/flame maple/bubinga 5-string, and a VM Jazz with a P-bass neck, Dimarzio Area J's, vintage bridge, and DR Dragon Skins.

I hate skinny Jazz necks, so it was still a miss for me, but he is going to hang on to it for a while.

If it turns out to get a lot of use, we'll put some good tuners and better saddles on it, and he'll have a great third bass for little more than lunch money!
