Squier Vintage Modified Precision V: who's got one?

I spent the weekend recording the basslines for our band's next album. I strung the VMP5 with Chromes a week before - my first foray into flats - and brought the bass to try it on a couple of mellower songs for cool effect. I ended up using the P5 for four of the seven songs we did.

While my G&L Tribute L-2500 is awesome, the Squier w/ flats just recorded so well and played so smoothly. The feel of stainless rounds vs. Chromes of course takes some of the blame. We'll see how it sits in the mix, eventually.

I agree:thumbsup:...P basses need flats. I prefer GHS Precision Stainless Steel Flats. I tried the TI Nickel Jazz Flats but didn't like as much as GHS. TIs sound better on my Spector Coda 5XL Jazz bass. :woot::bassist:

Got my CAR one last week. Changed pots, cap and jack for 250k Pots, Mustard Cap i had laying around and a quality jack. Threw a set of Chromes on the bass and hell yeah.. Played it Sunday night in our church and it´s simply killer... Doesn´t matter what style it´s got everything i need.
Had great luck with the bass. It´s light (3.8kg), no deadspots at all.
If i manage i try to do some sound clips.
Any wishes?

Definetly a boost for the sound. In my ears made the bass sound more p-esque if you know what i mean.
But this is just for my ears.
For me it sound more even now and if i turn the tone-pot down it gets more of this nice low mid-heavy 60s sound.
With the stock pots and cap it was, dunno, just muffled but now there´s more p-bass going on.
If you want i can try to do some sound clips. Just tell me what you want to hear..

I'm not sure but I assume that the stock pots are mini? If that's the case, any trouble fitting them into the cavity?

Great to hear about the sound improvements. A little more "P" is always a good thing. I am considering buying one of those wiring kits from basspartsresource.com which is about $25 but with "normal" sized pots, etc. I've also toyed with the idea of replacing the pickup with a genuine Fender P5 pickup.

Did you make any recordings before the mods? If so, a quick before and after would be cool. Otherwise just a quick clip of how it sounds now would be super!

Now it´s a .47μF Mustard Cap..
Concerning the pots, yes mini pots originally but if you look for the orientation you get normal sized pots in.
I try to do some clips and photos tomorrow. Directly into my interface the sound isn´t that great then with my rig, which is standing in our church. (Yap, worship music even in Europe;) )

Big-time. The OEM strings aren't bad, but the instrument wakes up with better strings.

I tried DR Dragonskins, Dunlop nickel rounds, D'Addario XLS nickel rounds, and balanced-tension D'Addario nickel rounds in both tensions.

I liked the BT sets best, by a wide margin, for feel AND tone. The .045-.145's have a heavier feel, with firm tension. The .040's require a lighter touch and/or a slightly higher action to avoid unnecessary fret noise, but I prefer the tone, especially the extra growl and detail from the thinner B-string. YMMV...

I really want one of the American P Bass 5ers, but I don't have the $1200 or so to throw around at the moment. The Squier sure is tempting. I'm really into the CAR and maple color scheme. This is probably going to sound like a dumb question, but does anyone have any experience playing the Squier and the American Precision 5 side by side? I'm sure there must be a noticeable difference somewhere to justify paying an extra grand for the US version, but what are the main differences? Are they that glaring through an amp I wonder?

I have sit down with both of them back to back ,I ended up buying the squier. To me the squier just felt better.I have since upgraded mine with hipshot tuners and an ABM bridge and now it is is monster. The only difference I could hear between the american standard was that the pickup is slightly smoother . but I have seen american standard pickups for about seventy five bucks on eBay.so you could slap one in. Tuners just helped with the balance for me anyway . the bridge helped with the sustain and also its a toploader so string changes are easier.I have my eye on the Aguilar p5 pickup for my current one and will be addind a second p5 in olimpic white ,I plan on the same mods but will run one with flats.

I took my CAR Squier VMP5 out for its first gig last night. It was with me as a backup to my Valenti. It sat in its stand until the last set when I tried it out. I didn't adjust the amps settings on purpose. Of course there was a volume difference but the Squier sounded good. Nice and light as well but the neck dive was very apparent. Gotta get some ultralights!
