Star Trek: Picard

Well I went ahead and watched episode 5.

Seven did not disappoint, although I kinda feel she should have more obviously gone out in a blaze of glory.
The first scene, her attempted rescue of her friend was pretty gruesome...I was a bit surprised at how graphic it was.

Elsewhere, that nice sweet doctor killing off her boss...that has me intrigued, dammit...I'll have to keep watching now to see what else she's got goin' on.

So Captain Rios is the ______ character. He was rough and tumble and reluctant when we first meet him. He's ultra supportive when the drunk/space vape junky needs him to be. He's shirtless sexy time man when what's her face is feeling vulnerable. Wasn't he doing this for money? Does JL have money? His vineyard generates income? Is that in quatloos or gold pressed latinum? I'm confused.

This about sums it up.

I’m still in though.

It's got no gas. That's brilliant. They're putting so much......energy is the wrong word.....so is thought.....they're putting so much stuff into a season long story arch, probably two seasons. For what? Is the payoff gonna be worth it? Remember good stand alone episodes in Star Trek? No. It has to be an epic saga with the fate of the universe hanging by a thread.

I have no problem with season-long story arcs. If they’re done skillfully they can be very good. But this one “ain’t got no gas in it” so far.

Accents: It’s a puzzling distraction. For a show like Walking Dead, if you bring in a bunch of Brits for a story taking place in Georgia, you gotta ditch those accents. Star Trek, no real nationalities so accents shouldn’t matter. But they do and they’re oddly distracting.

Edit: Of course JL has always had his accent and it’s never bothered me, so I guess that undermines my argument.

Neither do I, as long as there's a payoff. I'm not hopeful that this is gonna lead anywhere that's gonna be worth it.

I watch this clip every now and then to remind me of how Picard used to be before he forgot he was an explorer/diplomat/archeologist/leader, etc...

We have a local broadcast station here in Phoenix called H&I TV, and they play an episode from each series 6 nights a week, starting with TOS, then TNG, etc, through Enterprise. I usually catch TOS and TNG before I go to sleep. They played that episode last week. It's one of the few TNG episodes that I really like.

I don’t always expect a big payoff as long as the journey is compelling.

I gotta say, that clip from TNG is far more memorable in its simplicity and sincerity than anything we’re getting now.

My favorite TNG episode is The Inner Light.

Ya that's on the top of most best episode lists. It's definitely a good one.
Yeah...I remember seeing it on its original airing. Right after, I just sat there & thought "Wow, that was deep".
It is almost a solo Picard vehicle (other shows did similar things; MASH did one with Hawkeye).
Anyway, it's my favourite & years later, with the Web, I learned it was a huge fan fav.
