This may be my final outright criticism of Picard because I’m drifting further and further into petty nitpicking. Truthfully, in spite of my criticisms, I’m enjoying the show.
The Star Trek universe has become extremely complicated. It’s impossible for the writers to reconcile 50 years of canon and make everything fit perfectly. They’re trying to tell new stories and attract a new audience while being faithful to what others of us already “know”.
It’s not 1967 or 1987 or even 2007 any more. Younger viewers expect more action, they may not know much if any of the canon, yadda yadda yadda. Star Trek has to move forward or it would die.
To make everything sort of work, the writers have to play fast and loose with things like time travel. I find this tedious and troublesome, but that’s what they feel they have to do. I accept it as long as they’re telling me a good story. I like the stories of Discovery and Picard. But I have to bend my mind a little in order to wrap it around what they’re doing. I guess that’s my problem.
My criticism of Picard is more basic. The writing just seems amateurish sometimes. It’s like they wrote a first draft, made a couple quick changes via a committee, and filmed it. There’s a strange lack of polish to the dialog and even the acting sometimes. It rings false to me in ways that draw my attention. It’s actors reciting written dialog. Sometimes they have to mutter “Mmm hmm...” because that what the script tells them to do, even though nobody does that except in Sling Blade.
On the plus side, they’ve spared no expense on things like sets and special effects. The show looks and sounds fantastic.
It seems like they didn’t lavish that much time and attention on the dialog and perhaps some of the directing. Or maybe actors like Patrick Stewart reach a point in their careers where they can’t be directed, like Marlon Brando in his later efforts.
Watch it and decide for yourself. Don’t be deterred by negativity from random internet strangers like me.
