Star Trek: Picard

The main points seem to be that the show is joyless, and missing all the fun and optimism and thought provoking ideas and stories that made tng great. The dialogue is overly quippy and everyone is depressed. I understand you like the show but you disagree with those specific points?

I wouldn't say it's joyless - I've laughed out loud on several occasions during this series. Jurati is hilarious, as are Raffi and Seven, and the younger Guinan is sassy to a fault. Picard is still the same wise, optimistic captain he always was, just older.

The premise is, in many ways, a retread of several previous TOS/TNG stories (Time's Arrow, The Voyage Home, City On The Edge Of Forever, Assignment Earth), but doesn't suffer because of it - it embraces the connections, like the punk guy on the bus (another fun and far from joyless moment), the references to Gary Seven, and so on.

I shall reserve my judgement on the story arc as a whole until the end of the series (I need to see what Q's resolution is) but, other than some pacing issues, I think it's been a great series so far.

hopefully it will come on Netflix (like Discovery) in coming months

Anyone know if ^^^that is still in the cards? The missus and I finally sat down to watch Season 1 Episode 1, and we were entertained enough to say "sure, we could watch this series regularly"

...but ah-ha! Paramount+ is using Picard S1E1 the way dope dealers give a "taste" and if we want to watch any more episodes we have to sign up for their monthly subscription. Bastards!

It’s looking to me that Netflix Aust won’t be getting anymore ST. I am resisting going to Paramount+ as we have too many streams as it is.
I have bought Picard S1 on dvd and will do the same with S2 and watch it that way. I also picked up a couple of ST movies on DVD and will keep doing so as I find them.

Ouch, at least buy it on blu-ray.
The only thing S.T. to buy on DVD is Voyager & DS9.

Netflix currently has DS9 & For the Love of Spock, but even that will not last. Paramount are winding down their licensing to outsiders so that people will subscribe to Paramount+.

In just two weeks they'll launch the new Pike series, Strange New Worlds, & then on to getting Paramount+ started in Europe.

Yes I’m bummed about missing SNW

When Season 2 started, I got & rewatched Season 1, as a "Season Pack" in 720p HEVC. That's more than good enough for my laptop.

In today's interconnected digital world, other than one's own ethical boundaries, there is no reason to pay any such corporate extortion.

Helpful hint: a VPN is a good "condom" when messing about in less than reputable areas of the web. They're free to cheap. Unless you prefer paying more bucks for the brand name, of course.

I just finished S2. OMFG. What a disappointing ****fest. Yes it had a few good moments and ideas. But it’s mostly a huge Star Trek disappointment for me. I feel kind of sorry for everyone involved.

Mind you I’ve also been watching 2 spectacularly good shows, Better Call Saul, and I just finished Ozark. To say Picard does not compare well in terms of the quality of acting and writing is a massive understatement.

They lied to Picard about his synthetic body & in a fit of rage he crushes Q to a pulp in his embrace, and scene!
The ending we could have used.
Q calling himself a god is just about how much he thinks of himself.

They tied the whole thing up nicely. Rios was happy with his 21st century family, Jurati became a "good" Borg Queen, Seven reconciled with Raffi and became a captain (although possibly temporarily), Q got his closure, and Picard and Laris were finally able to get close.

I'm just hoping Seven, Raffi, etc don't get too sidelined in series 3 next year when the whole TNG crew come back. I wonder if this might be a chance to see some of the DS9 and Voyager crew again too? Or if it might spawn its own 25th century spin-off?

All I want from series 3, to be honest, is an Enterprise, and to see the whole TNG crew on it! :D
