Star Trek: Picard

I watched ep1. I don't know what to think. I guess I'll say I half-liked it but the jury's still out. Patrick Stewart looks really old. The production value is high. I'm not sure about the story yet, but I'm willing to give it a try. Nothing draws you in like the familiarity of seeing Data. Nowadays, episodic shows really aren't the norm I guess - everything's a serial. As in Discovery, some of the tech nudges at me like just beaming in anywhere wants - why would you even need flying cars? I'll watch ep2 and se what happens.

Picard is what, 92 in the show’s timeline? (I believe Stewart is 79). I think they’ve slightly overplayed the doddering old geezer aspect but it’s kind of elemental to the beginning of the story. He’s been out of the game for a long time. Maybe he’ll switch back to caffeinated Earl Gray and the spring will return to his step. ;)

@Gorn I feel kind of bad for you. I’m in awe of your knowledge of all things Trek and I was kind of hoping you’d like this. But it is what it is for you.

I liked it less and less with each viewing because it became clearer and clearer to me that the writers of the show don't know Star Trek and don't care to know. They have a passing familiarity with it. They know the name Data. They know Earl grey. They know Borg cube. And on top of that, every action taken by every character is ridiculous. I'm tempted to say I wish I could turn off my brain and enjoy the splosions and the punching, but I can't, and I don't want to.

Really wish I could just turn on the t.v and watch it. However, it seems that there is some complicated and convoluted pay - per - view thing going on...

I remember watching the o.g. Star Trek as a little kid on tv... I was born in '67 as a reference. Fast forward to about two years ago, I developed a liking for TNG, thankfully my cable t.v. provider plays it without some special fee or complication..

It’s not pay per view. It’s a subscription. It’s not much more complicated than adding a premium channel like HBO to a cable subscription. Well maybe slightly more complicated. But it’s not pay per view. :)

Tuesday mornings I meet up with a couple ex-coworkers for coffee and chitchat at Starbucks. This morning all of us had seen Picard and the discussion was very favorable. One guy who is VERY into Trek commented on how well the writers clearly did their TNG homework and loaded Picard with lots of cool TNG plot details.

I’m watching Ep2 as we speak. I didn’t want to criticize based on the first episode but now I have to since there’s a pattern.

A lot of dialog seems badly written. Characters don’t speak naturally. It’s very clunky and contrived sometimes. And there’s obvious “acting” going on.

The issue isn’t story - The issue is execution. Also I could do without the gratuitous F-bombs.

Nevertheless, I’m 100% in.

I agree about the dialogue. Very clunky. I disagree about the story. I think that's garbage, but we know that already. But I agree, partially about the profanity. Not because I have a problem with profanity but in this case it's clearly there because it can be. I think there are two F's and an S and it's so unnatural. They shoehorned it in for no reason.
