Star Trek: Picard

Yeah...I remember seeing it on its original airing. Right after, I just sat there & thought "Wow, that was deep".
It is almost a solo Picard vehicle (other shows did similar things; MASH did one with Hawkeye).
Anyway, it's my favourite & years later, with the Web, I learned it was a huge fan fav.

One of the main themes of this episode speaks directly to me - the fear of being forgotten. I think many musicians can identify with that. One of my biggest regrets in life is not having that one hit single. I would have been happy with one. And as I get older, the less likely that will ever happen. Most people are forgotten after two generations - most of us don't really know anything about our great grandparents. For musicians with a hit, the memory goes further, and it's likely that a few people will stumble across a hit even a hundred years later.

Things I think about as I progress in my years...

Well...as a musician, you don't need "a hit" to be remembered.
That is, there are guys...faceless, nameless guys...that I recall seeing & hearing as a child/young teen.
These kinda guys are part of the reason I decided to try my luck at becoming a musician.
Thing is, these guys probably had no clue about their power.
Chances are it's the same with you...

I just streamed the episode. I'd forgotten how good it actually is. When Kamin's wife, Eline, passes, I literally burst into tears.

I think a big reason why this episode is so powerful is because of the acting skills of Patrick Stewart. What a talent.

The words on paper that the actor is bringing to life have to be good to begin with. I really think Picard has a serious problem in its writing that no actor can overcome. The mystery is why an actor of Stewart’s caliber, and who’s also an Executive Producer, wouldn't speak up and say “This is drivel. We need to try harder.”

I don't think it's that bad. It's certainly not up to the level of The Inner Light, but I wouldn't call it "drivel" either.

To make everything sort of work, the writers have to play fast and loose with things like time travel. I find this tedious and troublesome, but that’s what they feel they have to do. I accept it as long as they’re telling me a good story. I like the stories of Discovery and Picard. But I have to bend my mind a little in order to wrap it around what they’re doing. I guess that’s my problem.

Erm...the Retcon'ing is WHY it sucks.
They literally don't have to do ANYTHING with the past.
It's there, accept it, move on to newer and better stories.
Occasionally do a Call-Back and have an old character
show up to help out or be a pain in the butt.
Except...Hollyweird really doesn't have better writers these days.

Here's the current problem with Hollywood...
thousands of idiots with boatloads of money, tons of drugs, and no sense.
Really great writers write ABOVE the heads of the public to bring them up.
(Roddenberry, Fontana, Ellison, etc...not to mention Pratchett, Norton and the others of that era)

Current Social Justice Writers dumb stuff down and annoy pretty much everyone except the drug-addled fanboys that are too stoned to notice that it all sucks. Avenue 5 & ST:D really are awful. I mean painfully, horribly bad and those writers should be spaced for what they've done to Science Fiction. Send Jar-Jar Abrams with 'em, because what he did to Star Wars should have earned him an instant Jedi push off a cliff....or a nice lightsaber decapitation.

Here's what I believe is going on...they're intentionally making these new versions of great old tv & movies badly to muddy the waters and make money off the names...which also honks off the elderly, stresses them out and gives 'em heart attacks.

On the off chance that aliens are real and end up checking out our current crop of television to research whether we're an ok, species or not...they're going to feel the need to implode planet Earth to keep the stupidity from spreading.

Did the EMH forget that whatsherface killed Maddox? He saw it. She shut him off. Did she wipe his memory? It was good seeing Riker again. Troi's had way too much work done on her face. Is their kid homeschooled? Does she have any friends? If that planet has hostile aliens to the point where the house has shields, why do they live there? How about Earth? I dig that evil Romulan lady. Did Elnor and Hugh develope close friendship off camera? They seemed really chummy for two people who just met. This show is so sloppy. I do like how this episode slowed things down. Probably the best so far. I'm less angry at it. I suppose my expectations are too high.
