Steinberger L2

I saw the bass player of the band "The Fixx" playing an L2 live and well, one thing led to another and I thought it sounded fantastic in a live setting.
Gas!

Ha! Maybe we saw the same tour? I saw them in some half-ass bar (Katies? Katrina's? something like that) in Northampton Mass, must have been mid-80's sometime. I couldn't believe they were playing there, incredibly tight, great sounding band with an L2! I had only recently gotten my XP-2, so I spent the whole gig checking out his bass. Bass Pervert.

Pretty sure there wasn't a market due to cost

I was looking to buy an XL25 in the 90s and recall that the price had gone up about $1000 after Gibson bought Steinberger. It was $3000, at the time more expensive than either a Sadowsky or low-end Alembics (GC was selling Epics for $1000 at the time). The final Nashville built XQ basses had necks made for Gibson by Moses Graphite, they were no longer able to even make the necks themselves!!!

At least the Bass community got the Gibson 20/20.
Here in NZ, Steinberger was like $3300 1983/4 which would be 12-13K in today's coin surely

I think Steinberger was never a cheap or mid priced instrument.

Ha! I actually like Rush, not a fanboy by any means, his voice is an acquired taste, but the guy can undeniably shred, whilst simultaneously playing keyboards, bass pedals, and lead vocals. I only saw them once, 1980, he was still playing the Ric.

If I figure out it someone to send me strings from USA to Aotearoa what flatwounds for my L2 should I get?

I like 105E and I can't figure out how this bass can take normal strings

Put ball end in bridge, stretch tight through holes in headpiece, secure with screws, cut off extra, then tune. If not stretched tight enough you will run out of threads on the tuner before you get them in tune.
