I really have to cut back on the lows because it can get real boomy really quickly.using TI Flat on mine. Super expressive .

I know what you mean - the sound I try to approximate is the one Pino had when he was interviewed a couple of years back on BBC The One Show and he demonstrated playing bits of the Paul Young, wherever I Lay My Hat hit single. I’ll try and post a link.

It’s always a balance with the mid range - more gives great harmonics and upper note mwah. I’m enjoying this bass though!! Been out tonight again with it - several people wanted to try it.

The bass has roundwounds on currently so I’m being super careful - I’m going to order either TI or EB (maybe Cobalt) flats - whilst the strings are off I’ll have a look under the pg and pick up. I’ve got cobalts on my SR4 fretless and like them - TIs on my SR4 Classic - really like them as well!!

That is a very lovely bass you have (well several as I also have amethyst sparkle envy ). Getting this blueburst fretless sort of scratches the SR5 fretless itch though.

I keep Ernie Ball Super Slinky ( Cobalt) Flats on my other 2 StingRays. The Sandberg wears TI Rounds.

Blueburst and Peach are my favourite early Stingray 5 colours. I have to say, your beautiful fretless along with seeing film of Pino playing a 5 string Lakland fretless (55/94 I think) in the early 90s piqued my interest in an SR5 fretless - so when this one cropped up I was hooked!!

Btw I added a link to the You Tube clip of the Pino interview and playing his fretless Ray, to the earlier post. Interesting hearing the difference when they cut from him playing it in the studio to the actual track, which shows the level of chorus on the single.

Yeah still got the Cruz teal SR5HH Special. I occasionally play it at gigs - I used the crescendo Bongo last Friday - treating it with kid gloves as well!! I use all of my basses from time to time but my go tos have been the aqua sparkle and Tim C Stingray generally. I’m out again tonight and brought the blueburst fretless!!

So here’s my latest acquisition - early 1992 SR5 fretless, blueburst over poplar (possibly alder looking at the figuring); heavily birds eyed maple neck and even the fretboard has figuring. It’s almost as new!! I played it on several songs at a gig on Sunday (village Coronation party at the village pub).

It sounds huge but tamable with the EQ! Astonishing similarity to @SNsucks bass!!

I contacted EBMM re whether it would be alnico or ceramic - they replied there were several SR5 pick up iterations between 91-3 so couldn’t say for sure - 93 on are ceramic. I’ve yet to take a look under the hood - however the bass is not noisy in single coil mode so probably not the early alnico (single coil said to be noisy in those).

I have a 1989 and yes, you would know from the noise if it was alnico!

This bass, although very clean when I got it, has had a deep clean and polish (including under the pickguard), and I’ve discovered it’s got the 1992 variant of the SR5 preamp. The fretboard has been cleaned and treated with lemon oil and the stainless roundwounds replaced with EB Cobalt Slinky flatwounds. It really sounds great with these strings, you almost hear the fretboard saying thanks in a mwahy sort of way. Here’s a few more gratuitous pics!!

I love my Stingray Special 5HH, I really do. But i've been giving it so much attention and gig time recently that I've been neglecting my long time #1, a 2007 (ceramic) SR5HH. So I took that one to last night's gig with my L2500 and expected to play the Stingray for sets 1 and 3 and the L-2500 for set 2 (since I bring two basses to have a backup, why not play both? ).

Well, I didn't touch the L-2500. The Stingray sounded so good in set 1 that I just stuck with it and let it continue sounding good the rest of the night. As I do at almost every gig, I used each of the five pickup swith settings at least once and was just plain happy with how it sounded for all three sets.

I'll probably get some grief from my friends in the Stingray Special Club thread for sounding like I'm not that in love with me Special. I am, I just have two loves. Hopefully they can forgive me.

Unfortunately my wife only got one picture last night and it's not a good view of my bass (I'm standing sideways) and it's not a good view of me (I must have been distracted and watching a baseball game on one of the TVs ), but at least it's an action shot of the bass.

Very enjoyable evening loving mySR5HP 700RBII rig. Was a larger stage
so I had the chance to open 'er up and get that Rails tone. Came in
handy on Superstition and couple of rockers; while cleaning up nicely
on the tamer country and Motown. Restaurant Friday provided a
Bassman250 combo which also brought out a good Ray tone.

Thanks. I don't know why but I never connected with that one. Hoping the 4th time is the charm with the Special. I do wish I'd kept the Dargie 1 though, that one was special and would love another.
