Stingray Classic Returns

Gloss neck, it has the 21st fretboard dot and the string tree is in the A&D position, so this is a Classic

I was close but no Cigar:) Sure looked like New Black Retro seen on pictures in this thread when it caught my eye

It links to a 2016 episode from the U.K. show.

P-bass.

I just clicked and it went to what I posted? but #mikeswals saw a Classic to where I thought might have been a New Retro

This brought back memories.

25 years ago, I had a lengthy email correspondence with Carol over a period of 6 months. She could not have been nicer - an absolute sweetheart and I'll forever cherish my interactions with her. Anyway, amongst other things, (she was also very generous) she sent me a copy of the demo tape she put together for the then-new Musicman stingray. If my memory serves me correctly, she was approached by Leo Fender to do the demo, and as usual she sounded great. With the pick and flatwound strings, her tone reminded me a lot of the great Bernard Edwards' chucking on 'Happy Man'

Carol, wherever you are, you are loved. You too Bernard. :)

Digitize that tape, and get it online asap (or was it the flexi-disc that was given away as a promo? That is available online).

I just got myself a 70s in Sunburst, 9.25 lbs, hard case. I was FLOORED at the deal I got just by calling the shop, PLUS 36 month interest free financing (I'll pay it sooner) so I pulled the trigger. Let's just say I paid significantly under 3K and no tax. I was planning to buy on in the new year, but damn, full retail with tax is pretty insane. I paid less than a Stingray Special costs today :) MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Here's the exact one:

Awesome and congratulations on the insane deal. In Europe (anywhere in Europe) it's still $4,000

Are you guys getting low action / setups with this bass?

Well, I can only speak for myself, but... yes, definitely. Mine feels and plays incredible. I typically prefer J-bass necks, but I must say that even though the Stingray Retro neck is a bit wider, its profile makes it as comfortable as my Fender Custom Shop Jazz basses... and that takes some doing. In fact, the way the silky finish is on the neck, it may be even more comfortable. The finish is gloss, but at least for my hands is NOT sticky at all. It glides as well or better than any satin or oiled or Fender relic'ed neck I've played. And the action is super low with no buzz at all. Of course, mine is just one bass and anecdotal, but it is a 100% class act all the way. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it at all. In fact, I'm seriously considering getting another in white. Hey... my excuse is, one with DR Pure Blues rounds and one with Ernie Ball Slinky flats. :hyper:

Very good to hear!! Like 3/64ths BASS to 2/64ths TREBLE low??? That's how I like it!!! the only Stingray I was able to get low was a Classic (and even then the G was iffy) besides that I've had a lot of trouble getting regular Standard 4H Stingrays low, and have always sold them because of it. I'm hopeful this is more like a Classic than anything. The micro\-tilt instills even more confidence.

Are you running Cobalts now? That was going to be my first try, 2814s . If I didn't like those, TIs or Dunlops.

I'd measure it for you, but my caliper battery died the other day and I haven't gotten those silly little batteries for it yet.

I'm running DR Pure Blues rounds on this one. Sounds great. But if I get another, like I said, EB cobalt flats.

I’m amazed you got 36 month financing AND money off. Is this something shops commonly agree to, everyone?

Well... you'll never hear about it from the retailers, generally, if they do because of the MAP agreement with the manufacturers. But, yeah, it isn't all that uncommon as sort of an "under the table thing"--which is fine, legally, as long as it is not advertised in general that way (without the manufacturer's permission). I worked in music retail for a bit years ago and, like I said, not all that uncommon. Especially with small "mom and pop" shops.

This is good to know. I always thought that getting a big discount was conditional on paying cash (or using a credit/debit card). Thanks!

36 months no interest via Synchrony.

Always, always ask for a discount. If they say no, call somewhere else. The financing typically happens externally but with affiliation, so that shouldn't be a factor on their willingness to discount. Some places, like Zzounds and AMS won't give a discount if you opt for equal payments, but many others have no issue with it. Sweetwater being one of them. (This wasn't SW though.) You can DM me if you want to know where.
