Stoner/Doom Bassists thread 31: We never sleep

Just start building it and selling off what doesnt satisfy you. Thats what i did with most of the gear I have built

That's a decent idea. I'm not trying to start a real business so I won't put my name on anything I'm not in love with.

Plus I've had 10x more designs than finished projects so I'm still working out the building part. I can solder just fine but metal work and layout are still problematic. As with most builders, the early work is quite embarrasing. I'm still in my Blue Period.

yea i cut my teeth a few times on layouts. I use illustrator to get them done, I also have the advantage of using a mill to drill out all my enclosures. Much better than a basic press and magnitudes better than a hand drill

Did I hear starved plate tube approximation of an MXR Distortion +?

No love for this idea? Don't let starved plate fool you. It's not abuse it's just a state of being.

To Quote my favorite show:

"Fess Higgins: This whole thing, it.... it is embarrassing. My father's right again, I guess. He'd have to bring you here...

Inara: Your father isn't right, Fess. It's not embarrassing to be a virgin. It's simply one state of being. As far as bringing me here, companions choose the people they are to be with very carefully. For example, if your father had asked me to come here for him, I wouldn't have.

F. Higgins: Really?

Inara: Really, Fess. You're different from him. The more you accept that, the stronger you'll become."

The sooner you realize the power of starved plate operation the stronger you'll become.

Not sure yet. There is no hard rules. I just though it would be funny/cool if a Metal Zone and BDI21 could be a B3K killer.

Any clips to the tone we are trying to cop? (I like replicating tones on the cheap, makes me feel proud when my Sub $1000 rig sounds as good as rigs that cost 2-3 times as much) :hyper:

I remember someone saying they worked at GC (I don't think this was Jeremy from Encrust), but he was saying he would set up new bass players with the cheaper gear that could still get the goods for tone. I know there are a few GC guys on TB so maybe it was him. I can't remember.

i don’t like starved tube designs in general and tube pedals are money sinks. I wouldn’t recommend running it without dedicated heater supply and then yea maybe a 40-60V supply.

that means you need a 6.3V @ 300mA or 12.15V @ 150 mA supply whether it be DC or AC. Then another supply at 60V. All of it can be unregulated but you will need a toroid PT supply to handle this

Tubes are good clean and easily calculable gain stages. You don't need more voltage than the clean gain that you want. I don't need a 60V P-P output swing. 24-48 volts is safe and plenty loud.

a 60V rail wont get you 60V swing of course but operating a 12ax7 at very low plate voltages does not get the tubey sound IMO. You can always restrict the output swing using resistive dividers of course.

If you dig the starved plate you should build it, and prove me wrong.

I know. I was saying that there is no benefit to a 300V B+ when I just want a little bit of CLEAN gain. Preamp tube distortion sucks. I will build it. But it'll use diode clippers.

It won't be a tube opamp but I'll try to cop some of the pedal's quirks...mix of input signal and boosted signal when clipped. Loss of low's in higher gain settings...etc. The output impedance at the plate is a problem. I'll have to use an AU7 to minimize it's effects. The main impetus is that I want the same sort of sound as a D+ without the HF clipping of the op amp.

Once I'm done with Oldcrow's Muff, it'll be my next project. Jerk.
