Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread Part 11 - "Bath Time"

Speaker holes need sanding
Baffles need painting
No jack plate or jack hole on back
No grill for either cab
No hole for speaker wire inside inner port
One cab is missing a brace for the baffle
Obviously no speakers
No tolex

Aside from that tho, im golden lol. At least this is a project for me to work on. Gotta stay on the bright side! Lol

What cab did you get from him? Why didn't it have any speakers in it? Is that right that he charged you over a grand for the order?

Well my dispute has been closed with paypal so I'm happy I got my money back. Now I have a half functioning Magma lying around. I offers to send it back to Wade, although I am not obligated to, but he hasn't responded or offered to pay for shipping. Anyone here interested in it? If you're handy with electronics or know someone who has you may be able to get it working.

Basically channel A's distortion doesn't sound right, thin and fizzy. Sound fine if you don't push the gain.

Channel B has great OD but is quite noisy when you turn up the volume. Also the transformer would likely need to be replaced.

Did it ever go back to Wade after he originally shipped it? It might need a new PCB too...
No, never went back. he never sent me money to ship it back and I wasn't about send it to him and trust that he would reimburse me.

I would gut it if the pcb is bad, see if any of the pots are useable for other things and keep it for a project case.

I like Ampegfuzz's idea of gutting it. Now to expand on that idea, why not gut it and have someone make up clones of your favorite pedals & put them into the unit?

i know nothing about this stuff so it is all pretty useless to me. that is why I am offering to anyone looking for a project. just pay shipping.

You could have a tech gut it and rack mount pedals in there or another preamp that only comes in pedal form. Granted you don't own rack gear or amps so the point is moot. But those are cool ideas.

I would run them in groups of three. Running 4+2 would mean 2 speakers would be getting more juice than the other speakers.

how do you get them in groups of 3 and get a close to 8 ohm reading? i think if you run them in those groups of 3 you get like 5.6 ohms or something. is that close enough to work with 8 and not have issues with impedence? im getting 5.6 from the 1200S sunn cab my guitarist used to have, i think that was the reading we got from it.

it was two 612 cabs. again im not too bummed about it, ive got solid 612 cabs made of good marine baltic birch, they just need some TLC because wade clearly started them and when his life went to hell he never touched them again.

only thing im bitter about is him not tolexing them. everything else (even the speakers) im ok with, tolexing just costs a decent amount. ive got a guy who usually hooks me up with decent prices so hopefully i can get them done for relatively cheap, but most of the cab issues that i need to fix are just gonna require time and effort.

an emperor 612 starts at $1175. it can be as high as $1275 and im not even sure thats with shipping. so you figure even the cheapest through emperor (potentially without shipping) would have been $2350. so considering i paid wade $1450, that is a $900 dollar difference. the speakers im getting wont run me that high, so again, only the tolex job will send me over the edge (and piss me off lol).

Mike should be excited he got anything at all. I was pretty certain that he was going to be out $1450 with nothing to show for it. Sure he got kind of screwed but it could have been much worse. Glad he's gotten over it =P

well i talked to another guy who lived in the portland area who physically went to wades house and had him finish stuff. i definitely would have done that too, if not for the 5000 mile distance issue lol.

Yeah it would be something like that. If i check most of the cabs I have the readings are all over the place. 13.6 for a 16ohm,
3.4 for 4ohm, 6.8 for 8 ohm. One of the guitarists in my space has an old Sunn 6x12 down there and I think it's around 5-6 on the meter but on the tag it says 4ohm. What head are you gonna run these cabs with?
