Personally, I'd rather have the J99 single coils over the H50 humbuckers as well. I have them in my SB4000 and have zero problems with noise, even with pickups running solo. They've got more punch and clarity to my ear, but it's a preference.

I've been running with the bridge pickup solo'd, I do get some hum but I don't mind it. I'm finding I like either one pickup full on or the other, mixed it becomes to smooth and jazzy.

Never tried the Carvin buckers, but my J99's are exaclty how Corey described. Even my MIM Jazz had noise problems. I thought it was just "the way it is" with single coil pups. The J99's changed that perception. Dime both volumes, and no noise at all. Quiet as a mouse.

Skip, this almost nails most of your requirements. I heard these things are fantastic, and with the new improvements are much lighter than the previous ATKs. I've been thinking of eventually picking one up just cause I love ATKs.

Close so very close, but its active and the headstock is kinda fugly to me :scowl: There's an old ATK305 on the bay right now for dirt dirt cheap, it also has the active electronics but if i can score it for around 100$ I would venture out of my way to do a passive conversion.

You might want to consider a Carvin B50. If you can find one used to the specs you want it will definitely be under $1k, but even new it will be, just with a wait time. Just priced it out...

$867 shipped, no tax since you're not in California. There are some other options you could go with that could bump it up a bit, like a MM style humbucker in the bridge position, different headstock shape/finish, different frets, neck finish, etc.

why not just put in a series/parallel/kill switch in...that way you still have a normal J

I've built a couple B40's in the past, but they dont offer any split P pups...

You can order them without any pickup routes for an extra $50 I think. They just send you all the electronics and pickups loose. One of the guys in the B40/B50 thread did that and had someone route it and install a P pickup. It's insane to me that Carvin hasn't started offering this option yet, it's the number one thing I see directly after "Carvin is great, but I wish..." online.

Aight guys so I'm considering picking up a 5 string bass bu I'm having some difficulty finding one with the options I'm looking for so hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction...

What I want:
Under 1k$ price tag (prefer under 800$) used or new
maple fretboard
humbucker pickup ('s)
passive electronics
string through body bridge
bolt on or neck through
simple solid color (no flame tops or spalted wood)


Closest thing i can find are the rare maple fretboard USA jazz basses, but when i find them they are around 1200$. Looking for something less pricey though and seeing what options are out there, closest i can find are some laklands.

big black ones I honestly have no idea but your more then welcome to come take a look at it, its just a paperweight to me right now. I was considering pulling the trannies out and using them for the Adamos build, but i havent been able to find any info about them online to confirm they would even work for the build.
