Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread Part 28: Chicken Pot Pie

popularity contest. Best metal amp I have heard was a mid 90s VHT 50 CL. Great for that tighter metal tone.

So far the best metal amp I've heard in person, no pedals or anything, was a Peavey JSX. No joke. Tried it and a Mesa Triple Rec on the same day. The JSX had better overdriven tone, IMO. I prefer the sunn/fender model T reissue to the Mesa Triple Rec, as well, for distortion.

In contrast, the clean tone on the Mesa was very nice sounding. The dirty sound just had this muddiness I couldn't dial out.

Yeah it's nice having a close friend that does sound for some of my favorite bands. ;) He's actually out with Fu Manchu in Europe right now but he's pretty close/ done sound for the Melvin's, Hank III, Nashville Pussy, etc. I don't abuse it so he's pretty good with hooking me up.

I don't have friends... :bawl: I only know my band mates and maybe a handful of people here. Most of my homeis are in Florida.

Hopefully playing in this band will change that. I want to be able to open the shows we would want to see. That is kind of the ultimate goal, here. But, there are already bands here doing that that have been. Will be hard to try to climb that mountain. Thombo knows what I'm talking about. :ninja: :p

Yeah don't worry about it. It all comes in time

The band should help. I knew NO ONE when I moved to Albuquerque 10 years ago. Moved there with a former girlfriend who immediately started cheating on me once we got settled. I met a dude that liked Kyuss, he invited me to a house party, went to the party and there was a stoner rock band playing with no bass player (!). Everyone at the party was nice and pretty cool. A week later I was living in the second bedroom and playing bass in the stoner rock band. Met ********* of people, joined two more bands and all was well. I was lucky that it happened so fast and I met such awesome people, but it'll happen for you as well.

A guy has two of those for sale without tubes

What can you tell me about them?

They sound pretty decent as guitar amps stock. Some people just add 1/4" input and output jacks and call it done. Other people like to swap components for better tone. They're great platforms for modding that can still be had for cheap. I'd probably keep it stock and throw an overdrive pedal in front for distortion. Here;s some videos.

Perhaps Mr. Dunwich will chime in with some knowledge, I don't know that much about this stuff.

Also, I think Leslie West used one in Mountain, not sure though.
