Stoner/DOOM Bassists thread part 37: Ancient Alien Fuzz

Just got back from the High on Fire show. HoF was fricking awesome. It`s my 2nd time seeing them but the first time seeing them on purpose. I saw them years ago with Converge,Baroness and The Red Chord. Being able to see them up close in a tiny club this time was great.
Goatwhore wasn`t bad,I like heavy sh!t,but it`s hard to take them seriously and not crack a smile when the singer wears gauntlets and plays air guitar during parts of the set.
Lo Pan....... They just don`t do it for me. They had a tight set and played well. I just think of them as a band I`d see in the movie Road House.
I snagged HoF`s Death is this Communion on colored vinyl for 20 bucks,pretty stoked!

I didn`t realize it at the time but fellow TB`er MikeD1687 was at the show too. Bummed that I didn`t get a chance to meet up...

Lol, me and my wife have been watching this reality show with amish people. I detest reality shows mind you, but that one's funny sometimes. They spend half of the episode talking about being shunned, what happens when you're shunned, how to get shunned...

Laz is probably flipping over a table about now, ahah.

Morning btw, need more sleep and coffee. Have a meeting in 10 minutes and my biggest challenge is going to be staying awake. Going to talk to my drummer on break about this new development with tryouts... what to do...

We tried toast's new Stingray through my rig last night, and he helped me dial in my tone closer to what I'm looking for with a second set of ears. That Stingray is freaking fantastic. Haven't been a big fan of the necks on most of the Rays I've tried, but even for a 5 string his is very easy to play and sounds fantastic. The Orange was a little less cooperative with the Ray, being active and all, but we were getting some gnarly tones out of it.

That was also the first time I've played a 5 string through the Dually. The low notes on the B string made my lower intestines tickle.

My main goal at work today is to figure out how to wire it passive lol

Low output passive basses are definitely the ticket for fuzzy gain world. My passive J-style sounds downright piddly and weak direct into a clean amp, but fuzz pedals and a dirty amp bring out so many sonic nuances of the bass itself. Is it science?? Or... ALIENS?????

Or should I go ask on the praise & worship thread?:confused:

Yeah this is why I prefer passive basses.


Pretty sure you are not allowed passive basses or fuzz in Warship.

Searching for "passive stingray" threads on the interwebz is pretty entertaining. You have a handful of curious individuals posting threads, and an army of old school Stingray fanatics who warship the magical 9v pre-amp and all the splendor it brings your fat warm tonez. "A passive Stingray is like a Mustang GT only using 4 cylinders" I think was one analogy.

Laz suggested I make a thread on here asking "How can I convert my Stingray to passive, I always leave it plugged in and the battery keeps running out :crying:"

Man, I had the 3015LF's for a little bit and I can atest to the power handling/low freq handling of this series of speaker. My old Jazz could only go down to A before everything was too floppy/ I would need a different nut. (5string set on my 4 string) It was so visceral. I can only imagine what the Dually does. When are you tuning down some more? :p

I wish I still had the pic of my OLP's guts for you. It shouldn't be that crazy to do though, right? Vol pot, Tone pot, Pickup. Am I missing something. I think you can wire it like a P bass or like a Jazz bass. Maybe do some digging in the OLP club?

Not too difficult, but I want to keep the pre-amp available. Ideally I want to add a single push/pull knob, pushed in is preamp mode with nothing changed, and pulled out bypasses the pre, and bypasses the on/off thingy in the output jack... for passive mode I just want to send pickup signal (in parallel mode) -> volume knob -> output. No tone necessary.

Was going to put the bypass between the pickup selector and the pre, but after opening it up, that looks like a grittier endeavor.

So my ad on the left is now for some Steelers MVP Ticket Giveaway with a hot 20-looking girl smiling at me, I like her more than the T-shirt ad girl :ninja:

what do you tune to in Supervoid?


Although the guitar may downtune to B or A for some of our songs the bass is always either half a step down or drop D half a step down.

We have started writing some stuff where we tune C# standard and drop B for some variety.
