Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Patrick we need to hang and measure up... gear I mean! I need to hear the glory of the Bluebeard first hand... and probably spend the next bit searching high and low for one as I suspect the GAS will be unnerving. Good luck at the audition! I would love to do something QOTSA-esque.

I just blew wads. How is the Hovercraft? I have been somewhat gassing for an Elder Giant. I don't know why (and I know another amp is not what I need) but I have insatiable GAS for a custom head. I want to get on the ball with that before all of these makers start to really jack up their prices with what I see as an inevitable boom in demand.

The HC is awesome. I use it for recording bass and guitar. Plenty of lows. The problem is not enough power for a gig unless there's full blown PA support. It's enough to do stage volume in my three piece, just barely. An Elder Giant should have enough juice to do a room w/o PA.

How does that casino handle dirt? My old guitarist had one and its shrieked like a banshee.

Also is the 2x12 new or did it ship with the hovercraft? Never saw it before.

I was watching a live Graveyard concert and the singer/guitarist was rocking a P90 equipped Casino type semi-hollow Gibson guitar and that thing was humming so bad when he wasn't playing and he just let it hum away between songs.

I saw Crowbar several times in the 90s and they would just let the amps + PA go into full feedback mode between songs. Hands off the guitars, LOUD, body-massaging feedback. It was incredible.

Funny enough, when I saw Down recently (sans Kirk, sadly) there was zero feedback. Surprisingly, because Pepper was playing a semi-hollowbody with a lot of gain on the amps.

I didn't see the amps either, just the cabs, so who knows what they were running. It sounded good though, the guitars at least. The bass sounded terrible, but I would bet money it was the house sound, because I couldn't hear any bass that night from any band.

I could say the same about the bass from Down and King Parrot, but OG had some boner-worthy bass tone. It was forward in the mix even.

Yep. Get comfortable and **** starts to slip.

The jam that's separate from practice is huge as well - that goes a long way toward tightening up the band, coming up with new riffs and ideas. Tried to push for that in the last band to no avail.

Thats one thing about VEGA that I love, we almost spend more time jamming than actually writting or practice old stuff. Someone will just play something random and one person jumps in and then all out 15-30 min jam on it. Then when it ends, we just stop and wave as the riff floats away, back into the Kosmic Kloud never to be riffed again, because 99% of the time we arent recording it. MAYBE one tiny part, if we remember it, will make it into a new song. Then well be like "oh we should probably play the song we were going to work on before that Kosmic nod took over...what were we working on?"

Even if you said yes to selling the BB, youd probably just back out a month later...hah kidding

Speaking of The Kosmic Nod...do I care that I just bought 3 copies of the same song? NOT ONE BIT....

When OG played, it was the reverse of everyone else. Martyn was right in front of me and I could hear him pretty well and his tone was great, but the guitarist was a little distant. Every FOH mix that night was huge on drums and vocals, but all over the place for everything else though.
