Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

@Satyrnine A Blacktop Jazz has been on my GAS list for a long time. The Blacktop Precisions are usually on the wall at my GC and Sam Ash but never got my paws on a Blacktop Jazz to diddle. Jazz bodies are just so comfy. I think I may just order a jazz body with two or three p bass routes in it. Already got one Dimarzio P bass pup waiting in the parts bin I got in a trade.

I've considered the blacktop as well. Not sure how P/P would work out. May be bitchen. Issues is until it's in the band mix you'll never know how it really works.

Just not all that happy with my P/J but then again I haven't messed with them much lately. Have been considering trying the 86 RB650 again. Thing is now it feels like a toy compared to the heft of the ATK and T-45. Not that tone is 100% based on instrument mass.

Seriously nice work. The playing is outstanding. The bass passage a minute or so into "Big Sky, Black Horse" is tasty as hell.

So far I checked out that track, "These Mountains...", "Cicada", "Low Water" and "From the Brown Sun."

The word awesome gets tossed around far too often, but it's applicable here.

I really gotta pay more attention to the talent brewing on these pages. Some great shrt happening.

Awesome! Best part is they aren't crazy expensive either. I do enjoy building my own instruments though, there's just something about it I love. Three P's would be pretty wild. I can't imagine what 3 P's in series would be like. drool I put a push/pull in this Jazz to series/parrallel the pickups. For the most part though, I use just the bridge. (yes, I know that's weird)

Oh, forgot to mention, progress is being made on the KT90 based 450+ watt bass amp I'm building along with Frantzen Amplification. The thing is going to be so ginormous that no stock chassis is going to work. Getting a custom chassis laser cut, which should look super nice. 22" x 10.5" Going with Sorbothane feet to minimize microphonics. We've recently decided it's going to be dual channel, but with a twist: The dirty channel mixes with the clean channel instead of the typical one or the other, so you can blend in as much dirt as you want while retaining a tight/powerful low end. I'm beyond pumped.

I had a few different Ibby Roadstars and the one P/J I had it seemed like the two pups didn't match, I was always fooling with the volumes knobs when running both pups. I figure a double P would match better and give some good grind too.

I found it cut really well, surprisingly. That said, everyone's rig and mix is different. I'm pretty sure the P pickups on the Blacktop aren't your standard P pickups. From what I recall they're quite a bit hotter on the bridge P, but the unusual bridge positioning keeps plenty of "cut". Really great chord sound. Growls/grinds quite nicely.

The pups on the Blacktop are placed where Jazz Pups would be too, well with the offset of the split, right? I think I read they have 500K pots too.
