Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Just never used a shelf ported cab before. Ports seem more adjustable or tuneable. I could build these for my E140 now, but down the road I may want 3015. Shelf is kinda fixed limiting tuning.

Edit: I'm going to shut up now... Mainly because I completely disregarded blocking the port altogether. Had a bag end cab with an optional port (hole). Sealed it was too quiet but did tighten up the response.

So much science talk going on right meow...Makes my brain hurt.

Guess whos playing a show in Madison on Thursday with Wicked Inquisition, a ex-Bongzilla 2 piece and another local 2 piece, only to open the gas station at 6am on friday. THIS GUY!!! Definitely going to need a nap before we leave for Iowa on saturday.

Also who thinks I can fit a folded 18, 1820, 218, 3 heads, pedalboard, bass and a drum kit in my focus wagon...

So you'd recommend the BogeyBass 215 over the '66? As far as tuning goes, what is my target relative to my tuning? Do I shoot for the freq of my lowest note or higher/lower? When selecting drivers for my Bassman215, I found via WinISD that the current CB158's would be pretty decent to like 40ish Hz if I lengthened the slot port a couple inches. I haven't gotten to that yet, but I think an all round more engineered cab is needed for this wicked amp I've got in the works. I'm sure 3015's in an engineered cab would slaughter my current mutt cab.

Edit: If the '66 indeed is the 2x15+2x6", I don't think I want to go that route. I really would like to stick with the traditional 2x15 layout. Maybe that means the BogeyBass design is for me?

Just like Julian said double the frequency of your lowest note, should roughly be the area roughly where you'll be seeing the most power. So that is the area you want to control cone excursion the most. So for you that's the 60hz range. What you're adjusting is maybe 10hz around that give or take, according to what gives the best power handling and the least noise (chuffing/farting).

I recommend the Bogeybass 215 because it has the most tubular port area than JohnKs. Tubes are very easy to adjust using the rice method.
Extending a perpendicular port shelf is second easiest. That'd be something like Julian's CL606.5 if he finds the plans.
The Simplexx has those triangle ports and allot of them which means to adjust the tuning you'll be making a minimum of 8 cuts, one for each port, if you've already got the mitered edges made. Otherwise it's 24cuts total with 16 of them @45°. All that just to test a different tuning. A recipe for frustration.

For me I know I'd be happy with a '66 because I know what it does and how to tame it. And the work taming is with the enormous potential. I've read so many sale threads here on TB with people saying "it's just not for me." Every time I think that the EQ effort went worth it for them. So assuming your soon to be made TubeMonsterAmp is what you plan on using, you probably aren't a ParaEQ on the floor kind of guy. You'd probably rather have another dirt pedal instead.

So I'm with Julian saying a '66 probably isn't for you.

With a shelf port, if you know what you are doing you can extend or shorten the shelf with removable planks.

Yes I will post the CL606.5 plans. ;)

Was getting some annoying extra clank from the ATK - added a little relief, sounds awesome.

Also RAT > SVT = Holy Balls Heavy. Didn't notice the low cut as much either. Going to re-do the pedalboard for this amp, the American Sound is kind of redundant now, going to stick to the Bazz, BBM and Rat or ODG for drive. Going to try to fit my 2-button footswitch on the board as well, so I can set a low end boost on the GEQ and switch it on when using a pedal that cuts low end. Really though, I could probably just skip the board altogether and be pretty damn happy. Don't see that happening, but it's nice to know I could do without it.

I'm convinced that once I have the money to burn, I need a custom made, bad ass rat,
like a rat tail or something.

If the tl606 has been retooled to be 1/2", I'd be interested in that design.

My guitar player was asking about that GK amp sim pedal. Trying to far through pages now.

Well, we've got a history with Russia, so let's just say it wouldn't look like that ******** Crimea situation if that was Poland.
This nation has been practicing uprisings and insurgency since 19th century, so we've got that part pretty much covered ;)

You know press, they are looking for sensational stuff, so they just got the story from the more paranoid folks and didn't bother with the rest.
The situation in Eastern Europe isn't stellar, but it's far from near escalation how they describe it.

...but it's not the place to discuss geopolitics.

My guitarist got a new girlfriend, there was some kind of boyfriend's day or some othe BS like that a few days ago, so she got him a sweet Epi Flying V. All I get from my girlfirends are boxer shorts and t-shirts. Talk about lucky fvcker...

Keeping mine mostly flat so far, bass up a little. I don't know why he'd want to put another eq in the loop, the 10-band graphic is really flexible and sounds great. It's also footswitchable which is awesome. I do wish that the drive could be turned on and off via the footswitch, but that's the only gripe about the head that I can come up with.

Mine's just a US-made Rat 2 (more robust than the Chinese ones), I put a 308 in it, but I thought it sounded great with the old chip. It sounds awesome, and it does cut some low end, but if you're going to have it as an always on drive you could compensate with EQ later in the chain.

Picked up a cheap rat fur rack case for the 2-PRO yesterday, not the best but it'll do for now. Matches my cabs, at least. Once I move some gear I want a nice plastic SKB one.

Setting up for a video shoot for the new Legendary ShackShakers record. Found a cheesy old town hall kinda place in Cadiz, KY. There will be a live audience as well. Running my First Act Delia Hollowbody electric through a Reiner 6SL7 pre. The upright is going through a Michael Pope MPP2. Both powered by a Carvin DCM2000L into my sealed 1822 cab
