Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Got a bad case of the Mondays.

Seriously, 5" of snow and my phone died.

Also, last night the new drummer forwarded me the message that he got from the guitar player that cancelled. It was a shaging novel about how he has terrible anxiety when it comes to driving cars, especially on the interstate. He lives in the northern suburbs of chicago - about 2 hours from where the drummer lives. WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU VOLUNTEER TO BE IN A BAND THAT PRACTICES TWO HOURS AWAY IF DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MAKES YOU SO NERVOUS THAT YOU HAVE TO TURN AROUND AND HEAD HOME AFTER 30 MINUTES?!

I'm sympathetic to anxiety issues, but for shags sake, this is extremely disappointing.

Back to shaging square one.

So, I didn't know this before, but we were about to break into one last song at our last gig, but my guitarist gave me the "kill it" hand gesture. So I thought we just didn't have time. Turns out, his two week old Hovercraft **** the bed. He told me last night at practice when I asked him where it was. The filter caps? (yeah, I don't know a ton about tube amps) are f'd. It wasn't biased correctly before shipping, is the keyboard tech's guess. He still has to send pictures to them to see what they are going to do.

Damn dude, that is awful. Did he buy it new from Hovercraft or used from someone?

That sucks man, I've had so many variation on this kind of disappointment in the last year. People who get on board for playing then say bail because something is too much for them. Makes you wonder why they signed up for it in the first place. I too sympathize with anxiety issues, but it's still frustrating.

What's up with Ear Candy cabs? There is one available locally (212) and I know nothing of the company. I'm not really interested in the cab, but from Ear Candy, it is advertised as being louder than any commercially available 810 or 215, which I find highly suspect.

Cab gurus?

Ho boy. They are nice cabs for sure. Lots of crazy stories behind the builder. If you google "ear candy cabs" my TB thread is the fourth hit: EarCandy Cabs - Beware: Crazy Ahead | TalkBass.com

They are solid cabs. I use to gig an SVT-CL running two of their 2x12 BassBombs in a vertical stack. That was a really rad rig. I'd say the 2x12s are probably about as loud as something like an SVT-410HLF?

It's just becoming an odyssey of ridiculous ******** at this point. I know you've been going through it too, so I appreciate the empathy. I never in a million years thought that I'd be having so much trouble finding a guitar players. I know TWO DRUMMERS that I could start a band with tomorrow, but no guitarists.

I put up a flyer at the local metal record shop on saturday, hopefully something comes from that. Also got 2 $2.00 band shirts (Thrones and The Antiprism, who were an awesome local thrash/doom/whatever metal band) and 3 $5.00 CDs - Solarized - Neanderthal Speedway, Zoroaster - Matador and Naam - Vow. Not a bad haul for $19.00.

Also, yesterday I spent $4 on some paint and painted the cheap looking faux-metal accents on my berhinger cabs flat black. Looks 100% less cheap.

This my little setup...

It is now ran through a Boss tuner - Pearl OD - DigiTech Death Metal - EHX Muff. The sound is ground shattering, but really needs some playing with. Hours of fun though

Brand new, 200 watt custom Falcon. Yeah, it hurts.

Check out Deep Politics and The Black Tar Prophecies I-VI.

They really don't have a bad album though.

Agree. Really dig Grails.

They are based in Portland (Oregon) and I lived there from 2009 to the end of 2013 and I never caught wind of them playing out in the area.

I read somewhere they don't do many local shows but spend most of their gig time on the East Coast and off country.

I don't even know if they are still together as a band. I contacted their manange a while ago to try and organize a Canadian tour and the response was that they have no intention of touring anymore.

That really sucks, I hope Hovercraft has a warranty or at the very least the builder makes it right out of a sense of propriety.

Am I alone in my disappointment that Eyeball Kid's head isn't an actual giant eyeball?

You mean you DON'T see a guy with a giant eyeball for a head?

Somehow, I am seeing four of them.

thats a band I had with my three brothers! We were kinda like a weirdo Partridge Family band.

Yeah this week is going to suck sucky goat ass.

I wish I was hanging out in the park askrere posted pics of. Beers, campfire...maybe on old Hammer flick on a portable DVD player or something...

I want to be back there too. What's a "Hammer" flick?

I went with a friend who wanted to try playing drums... Wow 1000% improvement over my buddy who refused to use his hands lol. I literally showed him the little I knew, grabbed a guitar and played a simple something and he caught on and could keep up after one play though. Granted he'd struggle on occasion and fill poorly a bit too often, but day one he can keep a beat in time!

My plan is now to sell the tama (potential buyer today). Then, I will finish this new kit and set it up with just a floor Tom and the snare, hi hat, bass drum and crash/ride. So me or my friend aren't tempted to get ahead of ourselves and goofy.

Ampage (of doom or otherwise) will probably have to wait another year. Blew all my spendy cash already on a bass and some accessories.

Would love nothing more than to either have a rig the size of the DFW Airport or at least something that could keep up with a loud, jamming band and live situations, but I just don't think it's in the cards for awhile.

Stuck with 35 watt practice amp.

If lucky, I might be able to scrape together enough to snag something off CL...maybe even a fairly loud combo, but...uncertainties...

Well, I can at least do home recordings in the meantime. Just really wanted to jam with some actual humans again...

It's hard to overestimate how much value vs cost you get with a DOD/Digitech Death Metal. You can get them so cheap and they sound so cool when used right.

What's a "Hammer" flick?

Hammer Films out of the UK. "The Hammer House of Horror." They made tons of great (and sometimes somewhat cheesy) horror films all through the 50s-70s.

They got immersed in the horror genre bigtime when they did late 50s - early 60s remakes of the classic "Universal Monsters" films of the 30s and 40s (Dracula, Frankenstein, Mummy, Wolf Man...) and they were best known for that genre.

If the names Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee ring a bell, they were two of the major players in Hammer Productions. For my money, Lee is still one of the most badass Draculas ever in film.

One of my fave Hammers:
