Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Man, I must be doing too much actual work lately, because every time I check on the thread I'm at least 5 pages behind lately. Nothing new to report, just waiting for the Dunwich ODB to arrive so I can make demos, been working on a little new music 20 minutes at a time over the last few days, but I threw half of it away already.
Not that into video games anymore. I used to play one or good Xbox 360 game a year, usually the Batman ones, Red Dead Redemption, GTA, those cinematic open world style games. I don't even have a console anymore and haven't played a game in years, limited time and too many hobbies.

I tried to get my kids into Red Dead Redemption...offered to buy it for them, etc. just because I wanted to see it played, but I never could talk 'em into it.
PS-- I think we are ALL working too hard.
If you've never heard Choke you should check them out. Probably the best NOLA metal band that no one ever heard of. Not even on Youtube, but the Louisiana Music Archive has both of their albums for free stream/download: Choke at Louisiana Music Archive
Tungsten had a couple of decent albums, too - Their main guitar/vocal dude Al Hodge owns the studio where the S/T Crowbar album was recorded - he's the one that told me about Choke.

I liked that game a lot. I love spaghetti westerns and I'm married to a lady, so I never get to watch them. Playing the game was kinda like watching a trilogy.
Me too, I've been eager for this ever since the tourbox.
My pine P bass body is almost ready to send out to get painted. I started building it almost 2 years ago and it's taken probably a year of that to slowly get all the paint and primer off it that I screwed up so badly. I sanded it a bunch of times, 15-30 minutes at a time for months, then last week I did about 5 rounds of Jasco to strip the rest off. Even that didn't completely work, so I I did another round of power sanding on it today and the only part that still needs work is the inside bouts of the horns. In hindsight I can't believe how much primer I put on it, that's been way harder to strip off than the several coats of polyurethane that is the part I screwed up on. Using the Jasco on the shellac based spray primer was like scraping off a pile of pudding and I sanded heavily before and after that.
Great holy crap!! Why didn't you just scuff it up a bit and paint over it? If you are repainting and not staining or going for natural wood look, there's no real reason to go to all that trouble to strip.
I understand, though, if you were wanting to completely remove a poly finish to go nitro or something I suppose.
I just did such a crap job on painting it that I had to take it partially down to the wood just to get it smooth. I'm not good at spraying, it's not really in my skill set and tried to learn from scratch with a really unusual waterborne poly that is really difficult to prep and spray. If I had just used rattle can, which is something I actually am sorta ok with, it probably would have been fine. The good news is I made the body from pine we had leftover in the shop at work from a job and it cost me nothing to make it, I just paid for all the parts to add on to it when it's done. Andrew Drake is going to hook me up and spray some flat black paint on it for me for free. Also, I'm sick in the head and can't ever NOT complete something. I should have just chucked it and made another one from scratch in no time ha.
Oh! I didn't get that you MADE the body. See, that right there is well outside my skill set. I just got the idea you were stripping some random P body for a refin.
I've done dozens of refinish jobs and while Ive used different methods and equipment, I got to where I could do pretty dang good with a rattlecan, if I don't say so myself.
The woodworking is nothing for me, I can do that in my sleep. We have a wood shop at our family business, I was raised with woodworking and while there were some new skills to learn and mistakes to fix during the making of the body, it wasn't hard at all for me. The painting part I invested in tools and materials, on a small and reasonable scale, and tried to teach myself how to do it. All my painting experience is either priming wood windows or painting metal with rattle can finishes. I made a one piece pine body, filled the imperfections with Bondo, did probably 5 coats of shellac based spray primer, level sanding in between, then mixed up a batch of black paint (clear poly + pigment), sprayed the color coat and that went fine, then a week later did the clear coat and just totally botched it. It sloughed off, rand, pitted, pretty much every problem you could ever have with spraying paint. It came out horrendous, I didn't even want to look at it for months and it just took forever to strip it off in small sessions while I had free time, before, during and after work. I probably could have done it in one day if I had devoted some real time to it, I was just kind of over it for a long time. I had thought about doing a hand wiped finish at first and now I kind of wish I had done that. I was nervous it would look bad and now that seems silly.
