Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Ever since the crazy snow a little over a month ago spring has hit like a ton of bricks. I've yet to be able to mow due to rain/laziness/wasp nest in the shed. Today was that day, and I just woke up to a flash flood reminder. Now the jungle yards gonna grow even more...

Also for like the 5th time in my flipper career. Someone contacted me then reverse haggled? I listed the acoustic at $20, they say $30 Wednesday work? Yes, yes it does.

Now if someone offered to trade that strat for a tele I'd be happy. Though the middle pickup into the bass settings of the butcher is great, and already formed the outline of a song for the girls.

Yo dudes. Dead tired this morning. Good weekend, but killer busy. Big party on Fri. night. Played a solid set on Sat night, well-attended, great soundguy and made some loot. Did an interview with a local music scene podcast, too, which was fun & different. Got to try out the Heritage 810 I bought from Ron a couple weeks ago when I was in Chitown and it sounds awesome, very punchy. Easy to move for a big cab, too. Also ran 30+ miles then was up before work this a.m. to get in a few more. Gonna need a gallon of coffee to make it through today.

I didn't get any pix from the gig, but if someone else did and there's a decent rig shot I'll put one up later.

Yeah, I prefer Teles too and have almost always owned at least one since 1977. Now that cheapo Strat is all I have, but I'm okay with it because I mostly use guitar (for recording) as texture or long drawn-out chords/sounds. I use bass for composition and always build everything else around the basslines.

Whenever I try to compose a track or song with guitar, it usually comes out sounding real singer-songwritery, which just ain't my thing for the most part.

I've said this here several times, but I cannot adequately convey how much I miss gigging. I've been recording stuff for years for my own grins, but it has been so long since I gigged or even jammed with anyone else.

I am almost desperate to get back into it.

The rub is--I'm older now, got some grey (although I still have all my hair!), gained a bit of chub (working on it) and it seems like whenever there might be a chance of playing with some cats, the guys younger than me all want pretty boys under 25 OR they are around my age or older but they all wear cargo shorts, Hawaiian shirts, fedoras and sunglasses and wanna play nothing but Eagles and Eric Clapton type middle-of-the-road golf-dad rock. No thanks.

I got a friend in town who's an ace drummer I've known for over 25 years (I just moved back to this town where I lived for a while as a kid and where I went to college) and he wants to get together to work on something, but it's been hard to pin down.

ANYFRIGGINWAYS...sorry to use your post to whine about chit. I'm glad you had what sounds like a killer weekend. There's no feeling in the world to me like playing live.

the new york gig is a 2 day visiting artist lecture/critique participant, it will be great to get out of LA for 4 days and to see my friends, shows, and galleries
apparently when you play erratic noise music it's considered art now:) i'll be rocking the rat tail with the feedback loop and the 1979 dr q, not sure about the basses, i'm afraid to bring my vintage L2k with me

I'm not very versed in technique or theory, so I find it hard to just write an off the cuff metal riff or other things. Most things I write originate on bass too and come to me as a mix of surprise and I guess true influence/feeling at the time.

Weirdly (or maybe not) of all the genres I've heavily invested listening hours to, sludgy/doom has influenced me the least in terms of music. However absolutely the most influential in terms of gear/playing style. Not for lack of trying to write tastey heavies. I just wind up playing other stuff 90% of the time.

I have pretty catholic tastes in music as well. I detest modern country, most rap/hip hop (though I like some of the early, more fun stuff) and I don't give a fig about opera really. But other than that, I listen to some of anything as long as it strikes me as good.

What I PLAY or try to write varies an awful lot, and never seems to have much to do with what I'm predominantly listening to at the time.

The issue I have is in this area if you go looking for any kind of "metal" band mates all you turn up with is the worst of the worst post/thrash/black/panda/satanic/drone metal "bands" consisting of one 38 year old dude living in him mom's basement, rocking a wicked line 6 combo.

I would rather play with the blues lawyer laying down a funk riff in one odd chord for 20 minutes, than put up with the terd described above.

I completely understand where you are coming from, and have experienced this sort of thing. That first paragraph also cracked me the hell up.

I have no problems, for instance, playing in a cover band. I don't feel there is any shame in that at all.

But while it is fine if it's what you are into, I have zero interest in playing the same 60 classic rock songs that every classic rock band in every pissant town plays, where the audiences have heard the same 60 classic rock tracks on the radio their entire lives and have seen countless local classic rock bands cover the same material, ad infinitum...

I dig a lot of classic rock, and I could and would play nearly any type of music or any cover song as long as at least a certain percentage of the covers we played were things I liked or hadn't become entirely sick of and bored with over the years.

But you are right...I think the mesh of personalities between band members is more vital than everyone having the same musical tastes and interests.
