Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Thinking about taking the Dunwich pre/DI off the board and picking up a cheap DOD EQ pedal. Its an awesome clean pedal platorm but it takes up too much board real estate and I dont really use the DI or efx loop anymore. I use my DOD250 as an always on for my grity clean tone so the Dunwich is just acting as an EQ at this point.

You guys think the DOD250 + EQ combo will be enough to drive my 800 Booster?

Julian...I tried forever to start more of a straight ahead heavy blues rock band for years. Just based off the experience that whenever I tried to do anything with "metal" in the title, I just got a bunch of guys whose biggest influence was Disturbed or wanted to play black metal (that's more recent). The problem with my plan was I ended up getting ambushed into playing 12 bar blues with people who could barely play and never wanted to use distortion A LOT. I would still do that though, I still really dig classic rock, southern rock and the branches of these genres that would be probably just be radio rock if they came out in the 70's. Still love extreme metal stuff too, it just seems nearly impossible to get going here at all and driving far to find it I'm still stuck with the same typical band BS everyone in the Band Management subforum complains about.

I feel the same way, up to a point. There are a lot of styles of music that just don't interest me at all, but I would get more enjoyment out of playing a less than ideal genre with good people than playing nothing.

In other news I think I might have a line on a stand up bass to borrow for the summer from a HS band director.

I started music in classical and jazz, but that was on a different instrument. I started bass and guitar in punk bands, mostly as a songwriter and never really started out in covers or as a gun for hire type of player. I have done both since then, in small doses. So I know I'm way more picky about finding or starting a band, as opposed to doing anything to play. Lately I'm conflicted about whether to seek out anything with decent people just to be able to play or whether that's a waste of my free time and I should just record solo or keep seeking styles I really enjoy.

You know i had a chance to keep my schools upright bass forever...my orchestra teacher from K-11 retired the summer of my junior year, not his decision he wanted to finish out my year but they made him...anyway he let me keep an upright bass at home over the summers in HS, he must have not kept good records of that stuff because when I returned it to school at the end of my senior year, the new teacher had no clue that bass even existed.

Ill owe one again someday...then Ill play it through PVYHenge.

I loved playing live so much I'd like to think this is true of me too, but in actuality, I just don't think I would have much fun if I had to play modern Nashville stuff or some other music I just did not care for.

Then again, I got so much out of gigging that seeing an audience get into it might offset the fact I was playing music I didn't personally care for.

I was in one band in the late 80s that was (IMO) really pretty terrible white boy funk stuff. I got asked to fill in for a bass player and the band liked me so much they kinda absconded with me. I played with them the better part of a year (as well as another band I was in) but I really disliked the music. I even had to slap and pop! (Oh, the horror...)

But thinking back, I had fun on the gigs, and it was more than just the money we sometimes made. I disliked the music intently, but can't argue that I didn't have a blast, and we even played some frat parties where the guys hooked us up pretty good with booze and chicks.

Hmmm...that ain't such a bad way to live after all.

Looking into getting a delay for my guitar board. My guitarist buddy has a Carbon Copy I really like, but I'm thinking something different. I'm not looking for boutique or high-end, just something I can get used for about $100 or so. Right now, I'm thinking Way Huge Aqua/Supa/Echo Puss, but don't really know any of the differences. Any other info/suggestions? Thanks!

In Walla Walla WA since the weekend visiting in-laws with the wife and kids. Downtown Walla Walla; the store: Hot Poop. HOLY FVCK. Right in Main Street along the wine tasting rooms and galleries, it's like a disorganized hoarders trailer full of vinyl, CDs, cassettes, old stereo equipment, guitars (mostly ibanez, samick / Greg Bennett, epiphone, squire), drums, and just random sh!t everywhere all on top of each other. Melted my brain.

How was the show?

For that matter, how is Warsaw? My family got to go to Europe about ten years ago. We initially considered flying into Latvia or Estonia then heading West. Then we thought we'd just fly into London, but it was a lot more expensive.

We ended up flying into Prague, then bumming around the Czech Republic and Romania for several weeks with a brief foray into Hungary.

I've never seen Poland, but I sure as hell would like to. There was a time when it was the biggest nation on the continent.

i'm gassing real hard on the supa puss right now. tap tempo, trails, tone control, noise features, expression basically a poor man's brightly coloured MF104M. that'll be my next purchase i think.

I was going to post up my THD Hot Plate 4ohm in the classifieds and I realized I have zero idea where to put it. Amps? Accessories? Seems like there might be a chance that someone on TB would want it. I used to use it for recording all the time with big tube amps, but it's been in storage forever and I'm clearing all my gear in long term storage out finally.

How was the show?

Well, the bands were late as they had some mishap with the van. Minsk got on stage without a soundcheck and sounded like a wall of mud, no clarity whatsoever and after half an hour they were plain boring. At least the bass player had a cool EGC bass. Floor sounded like a band practice. I left mid-set.
At least the support band was pretty good.

Warsaw is a pretty specific place. It was demolished almost flat by Germans during WW2 and rebuilt by communists after the war, so architecture wise it is a rather odd mix of old, older and new. It's worth seeing, I guess.

In general, there are far more interesting places than Warsaw. Lots of medieval castles throughout the whole country, most ruined by wars unfortunately, but still pretty awesome. Quite a few mountain trails to hike. Sea in the North, mountains in the South, lots of plains inbetween

As far as history goes, yeah, we had our ups and downs .


Re: TB amp, the seller claims it will be here by tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.

Gargh! Just found out my old drummer friend who wants to jam also doesn't have a bass amp. I coulda sworn he did...maybe he was borrowing one from someone last time I was at his place. Or I was hallucinating. That's possible. I was tripping non stop pretty much through the entire 80s and first half of the 90s...

This sucks.

All I have is a 35 watt practice amp. I KNEW I should have used tax $ to get an amp rig, but I got a bass instead. Now I'm thinking I should get a payday loan or sell my only decent bass to get an amp....that would leave me with a broken down SX P bass copy that's in pieces and a MIJ 70s Lotus P copy. I really would like to keep my MIM Fender...but having a decent bass is kinda pointless when you don't have anything to play it through that's loud enough to play along with a drummer.

Can you borrow a cab or anything? If it was me I would keep the nicest bass and play the combo a little too quietly until you can scrape up funds to upgrade. Just put it right next to the drummer or something. If anything do that, sell your lower end stuff and save up a bit and buy something used to get you by. You could probably get by fine with a cheap bass and maybe some reasonably priced upgrades like a new pickup and a good setup if that's the only way to make it work.
